Comsuming the placenta after birth?

I just read an article about this today. At first I thought it was a joke.. but apparently not. Has anyone heard of this? Did you do it or know someone who has? I
also read something about taking it encapsulated or as a smoothy?

I guess it is supposed to be really beneficial by increasing energy, increases milk production, pain relief and helping with postpartum bleeding.

Thoughts?

  • Yes! We encapsulated mine too, just got the pills this am so I'll have to report back on the benefits!
  • Yep - @nickiechan did hers, and wrote up her experience in 1 or 2 posts that were an interesting read. I have an acquaintance that did it back in the US, but she didn't report any noticeable positive outcomes from it.

How did I not know about this option before I it was too late? How frequently do you take them and how long? How much did it cost?

  • I was luckily able to do it even with having a csection. Thank goodness. I wanted to do it so bad I got my placenta encapsulated.

I cant really say if its doing anything for me or not. I have been sick all week and I dont really have anything to compare it to.(like taking them with a first child compared to a second)

So im just taking them because why not? I would rather take them and them maybe do something beneficial then not take them and miss out on them possibly doing something for me.

  • @lnvane00‌ how and where did you get it capsulated?
  • Yep I got my encapsulated. To be completely honest with you it is NOT a placebos effect. I was shocked at how hyper/jiddery I was after taking them. I had to lower my dosage because I was so hyper I was re organizing my kitchen cabinets and cleaned the whole house, which isn't a bad thing just I didn't like how they made me feel almost too much energy. My PP bleeding dropped drastically after taking them which I contribute to them. With DS' s PP bleeding it was a long time but with the pills I stopped around the 2 week mark. They also make me feel good. I have a small bit of PPA, which when it gets bad I take one. DH wants me to take them daily, but I haven't. Only when I feel down or need a pick me up. I want to keep them for when I go to work. I was skeptical about them working but my Doula cut me a great deal and I thought what the heck. My DH was even more skeptical but he has seen me on them and off them and he encourages me to take them.

Sorry I just saw this. I had one of my midwives encapsulate it. Even though I got transferred to the hospital from the birth center and had an unexpected C-section, they were able to save my placenta thank goodness! It was the only thing that actually worked out in my birth plan. But I know you can hire doulas to encapsulate it also. The hospital just refrigerates it until someone comes to pick it up. I just had to sign a piece of paper and my midwife came and picked it up.
