TTC after 35

New, Nervous and Shy...

Hi ladies, I've lurked a bit but I am new to all of this and I just feel so overwhelmed sometimes but at the same time I need people to talk to that "understand" what I am going through.  All my friends either have kids or have gotten pregnant very easily.  Some days are better than others I guess.  I deal with anger then hurt to just sad that I am getting older.

I am 35 and my husband is 33.  We have been trying for about a year and no luck.  My regular OB did order me an HSG test which I had and everything was "normal". DH had two SA's, the first not so good the second much better.   Is there anything else that I should be asking my OB to order?

When did you decide it was time to go to an RE and if I go to an RE what can I expect at my first visit?

I'd really like to find a chat buddy here. Any helpful information would be wonderful.   Sorry this is a little all over the place.

Re: New, Nervous and Shy...

  • Hello and welcome.  I have not had the experience of ttc the way pretty much everyone else on this board has I just never found the "one" and need to do it on my own.  However, since you are 35 and have been ttc for a year with no luck, I would move on to an RE.  I did actually go to my OB first for a few months and it was the most disappointing experience and I gave up on my dream for a few months before finding an RE and getting the nerve to make an appointment.  I am so glad I did but a little irritated I didn't look for him sooner as I wasted precious time with my OB.  Personally, traits in an RE that make me happy for mine...1) He listens to me 2) he started with tests such as XRay to check tubes and uterus, blood test for egg quality and estradiol level and U/S just to see if everything looked normal  3) he explains each process and what it means and 4) I am comfortable with him (something I really wasn't with my OB).
Sorry I couldn't be more help with your exact experience but I hope this gives you some info to go on.
I am fairly new here and everyone is so great.  You will find all the support you need here :)

  • I decided to go to an RE after my 3rd mc. I love my ob but the RE I feel is trying harder to get me pregnant. You need the initial blood work cd3 and maybe 7dpo.

My first visit with my RE lasted about an hour and he went over all my past history and came up with a plan of test I still needed and a plan for that moment. Then once my test came back he adjusted his plan for me.

    Good luck!
    Fucking bump!!!!

  • Welcome! I can relate to what you are going through.  It sounds like you are off to a great start on the HSG and SA, as the other ladies said day 3 testing is pretty standard too. I have been working with an OB (no ins coverage and cheaper), but will likely be moving on to an RE soon. If you have not checked already, now would also be a good time to call your insurance company and find out what is, or is not, covered. it runs all over the place, and can help influence your decisions about what you plan to do.

    All welcome

  • Welcome!! All the pp have given great advice that is spot on.  Since you've been trying for an extended amount of time, you probably should make an appt with an RE at this point.  You are already ahead of the game though by having the HSG and SA done.  Also CD3 bloodwork is important to do. Where do you live?  We've got folks from all over and perhaps you are local to some that can make RE recommendations based on their experience.

Best of luck to you on your journey.  Keep us posted!

  • As previous ladies have said I think it is a good idea to go to an RE after a year of trying. We went after 1.5 years but I must admit we were not consequent so did not follow any treatment until recently the end of last year.

You are very young so I would consult an RE definitely, best wishes!!!

  • Good luck with your decision...welcome to the board!

  • Not a lot of practical advice here (I think pps covered it), but just wanted to say Hi.  I know TTC is nerve-wracking, but there's no need to be shy here.  It's a great place to let it all out and get some support when you need it.  Glad you're here!

An HSG and a SA are a very good start!  Many OBGYNS don't do that and just dispense Clomid like it is candy.   I would ask about  Day 3 testing ( fsh, amh etc...)  You should also ahve a full thyroid panel done.  While/After your testing comes back I would do a few things.

    1. Check with your insurance company about fertility coverage.  Don't be shocked if you have zero coverage.  If you do have some ask them if you need a referral to an RE.

    2. Start researching good RE's in your area.  Ask your OBGYN for a reference but also do your own homework.  SART.org is a good resource.  You are past the year mark and you need an RE.  OBGYNS can be helpful but they aren't there to make babies they deliver them!

    3. Once you find an RE make an appointment!  It can sometimes take a while to get a consult with them as they are specialist.  Some people can get in right away but I ahve seen people on here wait weeks/months.

    4.  participate with us on the board!  The ladies on here are GREAT!  I also recommend atleast stalking the TTTC board ( trouble trying to conceive board).  The ladies there are in various stages of testing and begining treatments.   I learned EVERYTHING from them.

Good luck!   FX that you get that bfp very soon!

You are always welcome to private message me with any questions!

  • Welcome to the board I am fairly new here too. I think pp covered everything I can think of. I'm seeing an RE and will be getting the cd3 bloodwork, hsg and.... some other ultrasound who's name escapes me right now.
Also I just started temping and using opk's. Highly recommend starting that if you don't already. Its pretty cool and takes out a lot of the guesswork. Most people here use fertility friend.
    Good luck!

  • Welcome to the board! Sorry you're going through this. I would start going to an RE now. The process does take some time to get into treatments & what not, so time is of the essence. I wish I would've gone exactly at the 6 month mark, but I waited a couple of extra months & wish I hadn't. As some of the other ladies said, an RE is likely more interested in getting you pregnant, that's what they specialize in. I'm a lawyer, so I can practice any type of law. I could tell you a few things about family law, but just the basics. Ask about criminal law, I could talk to you for weeks down to the smallest seemingly insignificant detail. Same concept with OBGYN and an RE. There are lots of amazing ladies on this board, with a wealth of information!

  • Welcome!  I'm new here also.  37 & TTC #2.  I'm not working w/ an RE yet but my OB said that she would refer me after we have tried on our own for 6 months.   We are still w/in the 6 months, so I can't advise on visits.  With the fact that you have been trying for a year already, as pp's have mentioned, I would def look in to meeting w/ an RE.  See if you can get a referral and do some research for offices local to you.  I would make an appt as soon as possible.  I had my DD at 35 :) .   Good luck to you & I hope you find much support here!
