Anyone do the 24 hour urine test?

I did mine yesterday and just heard from the doctor that the results came back with too much protein in my urine.  I have an appointment in the morning so she said as long as I'm feeling ok (which I am) we can wait until then to decide what next steps are.  At my appointment last Thursday my blood pressure was perfect, protein levels in urine were elevated, but blood work came back fine.  I'm not asking for medical advice as I will obviously talk to my dr about it tomorrow, but does anyone have any experience with this?  If so, what was the outcome for you?  Immediate delivery or just bedrest/take it easy?  I'm 35 wks 3 d today and I imagine I'll be pulled from work but am curious what happened for other people.

Thanks!

Re: Anyone do the 24 hour urine test?

  • Yes, pretty much the exact situation but I was earlier so it was handled a bit differently. I started showing increased protein at 24w w marginal BP and good labs. I did my first 24hr then and since it came back okay, we just kept a close watch on everything. Around 32w I had some more marginal BP readings and my 24hr came back slightly elevated so I did a weekend stint in the hospital for monitoring and steroid shots. I was released with minimal restrictions (I asked to WFH 2x a week) and we ratcheted up the monitoring - logging twice daily BP w weekly bloodwork. My water broke spontaneously and completely unrelated to the BP / protein issues at 34w.

You're too far along for steroids, so I imagine they'll monitor you closely and may push up your end date to 37w. There's no research supporting bed rest, etc for pre-e, but it really depends on the dr.

  • My BP readings were elevated sometime around 32w, I think - my platelets were already low due to a surgery during the pregnancy, and started dropping. My dip strip first showed proteins at 34w so they had me do my catch. By 35w, my BP spiked and I landed on hospital bed rest for pre-e. If your blood pressure hasn't gone up at all yet and your platelets are good, you may be on track to be able to just go straight to 37w without hospital bedrest, but you will probably be advised to take it easy, and once pre-e is confirmed, they usually don't want you to go past that 37w mark. If they tell you bed rest, they MEAN bedrest, not sit at a computer desk all day - I might have avoided hospital bedrest if I'd actually listened instead of working my desk job. Pre-E escalates VERY quickly - you could be "totally fine" today, and land in the hospital tomorrow afternoon, so pack your bags and be ready for anything :) With medical precautions and treatment, it's not nearly as dangerous as it once was, try not to stress out :) Just try to be prepared. My experience was literally going to my perinatologist's office for a routine appointment and being told "You cannot go back to work" - not finish up the week or even finish up the day - just, don't go back to work. Two days later I had a high home BP number, I was told to go into the hospital for a read and some meds, got there, and was told I was going to be staying until I delivered - so try to be ready for whatever happens :)

  • Thanks for the advice all. My 24 he urine results came back abnormal Thursday afternoon and then my water broke Thursday night at 7:30 so nature handled the situation for me. Healthy twins were born via csection just before midnight Thursday so all moved very quickly. Dr commented it was good his water broke since we were heading down the pre-e path!
  • Congratulations.....glad to hear everything worked out for the best!!! :-)

  • Congrats! Very similar to how it all went down for me too. Glad everyone is doing well :)
