Holy Crap!

DH recently informed me that while he was outside getting the dogs to come in for the night he heard a gunshot.  Our neighbor just shot his 3rd diamondback rattlesnake on the other side of the fence from where DD1 had been playing a couple hours before.  Poor kid loves playing outside and I'm all freaked out about it now...  My male dog got bit on the nose by one 2 years ago May 2nd (he's with us still - thank goodness!)  He was protecting DH who was taking the trash out in the dark and didn't know it was there.  Evil looking bastards need to stay away from my baby's yard!

  • We had a baby copperhead snake in our front yard last fall.  :/  (We just moved to this house last summer.)  And when I mentioned it to the neighbors, they were all like "yeah, the kid down the street got bit a couple years ago and had to go to the ER" (?!??!?!) and the other neighbor said that they had a coral snake in their back yard.  OMG.

That same week I found a scorpion in our house.  (I know they aren't venomous, but still....)

I'm glad we have a large deck that the kids can play on, but still..........ugh.

I know it sounds crazy, but it's partly because of that kind of stuff that I never ever EVER want to have a yard!  Condo living all the way for me!  With that being said, we also have a GIANT park with two play structures and a track about 1/4 of a block away!
you know snakes live in giant parks, too, right??  ;)

@natty13umppo - At least with rattlesnakes, they should give us some kind of warning that they are around.  DH said it's a very eerie noise, and one you sure don't forget!

I KNOW!!!  I grew up in the desert and know rattlesnake sound.  No sound venomous snakes are much scarier   O_o

  • That's terrifying!!! One of the advantages of living in WI, we don't see many snakes around here.

We live right up against the woods abd have had our fair share of black snakes, luckily haven't had any venomous-that I know of.

But @babycaps‌ when we lived in a two story townhouse we had a small snake INSIDE our house, it came in the crack under the door. Yuck!! I really hate snakes!

We moved to Missouri from WI last year and I really miss not having to worry much about venomous snakes. We have a ditch in our backyard that occasionally will have water in it so we have to watch out for copperheads and water moccasins. We did have a black snake that we found half-way up one of our patio chairs because it was trying to climb up to get a bird nest. It was huge and creepy! I worry a lot about DS but I'm just doing my best to teach him to look out for them and to stay back. Easier said than done with a 3 yo.

  • I hate. hate, HATE snakes too.  The dogs find them and chase them up to the house where they hide under the front steps - always when DH is at work.  Then I have to shoot the damn things.  Fortunately, he was home for the venomous ones!  When that happened, he just let the dogs in, the one that was bit was dripping blood on the floor.  He yelled rattlesnake, ran and got a gun and went back out.  I was 8 months pregnant with DD1 and freaking out.  Dog is hurt and hubby went back out in the dark looking for the rattler.  Took f-o-r-e-v-e-r to hear a shot and him come back inside to take care of my dog.  Hate snakes!  I told him we need to move where they have none whatsoever.  I don't even want to see them in zoos - good thing we had girls!  :-)
  • @mevensen‌ I totally agree...I love not having many snakes in WI!

  • Yikes! How scary!!! As much as I am TIRED of winter (it is snowing again tonight), I'm happy I live in MN. We don't have those kind of scary animal issues unless you live way up north!

  • Venomous snakes scare me too, although I grew up in the country and really only remember seeing a few over the years. Every year I see the rattlesnake in the Bluebonnets picture and freak out a little bit. This year we are taking Easter pics in the Bluebonnets (representing Texas!) and I'm paranoid about it.
  • We had a rash of copperheads last summer. Both my dogs got bit from the same one (they were attacking it), and tons of other dogs in the area. We saw tons of them and other snakes because of how wet it was.
  • @nblondheim‌ I say that and you wait, there will be one in our back yard or something!
@Invane00 I used to have an irrational fear of there being a snake in the toilet.

We are getting Bluebonnet pics this wknd with the girls!  I told DH he's going to have to spend awhile looking through them to make sure they are snake free before we join him in them.
  • Oh, and all you northern ladies - you may not have the snakes, but I've been freaked by all the ice you girls deal with and how many of you slipped this winter.  Ya'll are tough! ;-)  We got a little bit of ice one day and everything shut down - hubby even got the day off for it!
  • I WOULD DIE!
I'm sure if I sleep tonight I'll have snake dreams. And I'm officially not going in the back yard ever!!
(Or at least until I forget this thread)
  • I hate snakes.. Motivating factor to move to canada..

I live in Alberta - we have rattlesnakes!

  • We have itty bitty Gardner snakes. They are kinda like extra long worms...not too threatening. Last summer though a neighbor found a 4 ft brown snake in his yard and you would have thought he discovered Brittany spears hanging out there...he called all the other neighbors to 'come check this shit out!' Then they all got a beer and killed it. That's how rare it is that we get snakes...they end up causing an impromptu block party when they make an appearance!
  • @andreabills - we got our Bluebonnet pics today - rattlesnake free!
  • Speaking of snakes, today DH was playing outside with DS. DS chased a frisbee and was about to pick it up when he grabbed something else instead. It was a big snake!! DH said the head was down a hole and seemed to be after something but the part DS grabbed was pretty big. He thinks it was a black snake but he's not sure. How scary! Now we're having lots of talks w/DS about not touching any animals he finds outside.

  • Omg. There is an article going around my area about an apartment complex with a loose venomous snake. The maintenance people found a weird large snake skin and had it identified as an African venomous snake. No one knows where it is, but they know it was on the grounds. How scary would that be??
  • Someone send me back in time so I can unsee this thread.

HOLY SHIT! I'm glad your DS didn't get bitten!
  • ntdane - Good gracious!  Glad your son is ok!  Glad your DH didn't have a heart attack too!  I think I would totally have been crying my eyes out after the adrenalin had subsided and the situation was resolved...
