support stockings

I'm 24 weeks with di/di twins. Not on bed rest. No restrictions as of yet (knock on wood)... however, my DH has been listening to twin pregnancy horror stories and tells me that I HAVE to get and start wearing support stockings so I don't have a pulmonary embolism. I plan on asking my OB about it at my appointment next week, but I wanted to see your experiences on here. Was anyone told to wear support stockings and if so, were your activities restricted at the time, any complications, were you on bed rest, etc? Alternately, do you wish that you'd had them (but you didn't) because they would've helped you out?

DH has reached his paranoid stage of pregnancy... I remember it well from when we had our DD... he will start to gradually relax again, until he's completely zen at the end. Strange but humorous (and adorable) to witness.

Re: support stockings

  • I'm a nurse and on my feet a lot, so I wear them at work but not any other time.

  • My doctor didn't say to wear the compression socks. Unless you have a history of blood clots or something then I wouldn't worry. I did end up using them post OP because my ankles got huge and they helped relieved the pressure.
  • I didn't have any clots but I was instructed to wear them around 28 weeks or so to help with my swelling. I got the open toe, knee high ones and they were actually pretty comfortable and really helped with my leg fatigue later in the pregnancy. I wore them all the way up to the hospital to deliver.

  • I had some but only because I was on bed rest for PTL. Mine were super comfortable. If your OB hasn't told you to use them then there is no need to.

  • I was given support stockings by my OB because of getting some pretty bad varicose veins.  I hate to wear them myself.   They are thigh highs and so  me days I can wear them and feel pretty comfortable but other days I feel they are cutting off my circulation and can only wear them for about 4 hours.  I was measured by a nurse for the right size but I think it maybe be because I am starting to swell more now.  It hasn't restricted but if I wear my leggings I can not wear them because the cut the top of my leg funny and you can see it when I wear them.  My OB also is a vein specialist and was able to do an ultrasound on my veins to make sure I didn't have any clots.  Only because my veins are popping out and look horrible.  Sorry for the long story but that why I have them.  I am currently 23wk4d.
