solid foods-how often

Yesterday my sitter asked me when she would start feeding ds solids. I feed him solids after his 5:30 feeding while we eat dinner too. His pediatrician didn't say anything about adding more feedings so I didn't really have an answer for her. I was just wondering how many times a day you are giving lo solids?

Re: solid foods-how often

  • Usually once, at supper.  But I have been randomly (when I remember and there is time) adding in at breakfast.
  • Loading the player...
  • We just started at 6 months and had been doing one feeding a day until Saturday. We just added a morning solid as well.

I am trying to be more consistent with feeding her solids.

  • I do two. Veggies at lunch time and fruit/oatmeal in the evening. Sometimes she gobbles it all up and other times she's not interested at all but I still offer it. She's obsessed with blowing raspberries when I feed her so it's been very difficult the last few days!

  • My chubba is up to 3x a day. He loves solids and gets cranky if we are late with meals. 9 am cereal & fruit, 1pm yogurt & puffs, 6pm veggies.
  • We feed her breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Usually a fruit of some sort for breakfast and lunch and then a vegetable at dinner.
  • Once a day around supper.. I've been doing oatmeal then a veggie.
  • We do twice a day, in the morning we do fruit and dinner time we do vegetables.
  • We do twice a day now, 10am and 7pm.  Dr suggested giving it about 3 weeks in between adding another meal, so we started with her night feeding, and now she also gets breakfast.  We will add a third when she is closer to 8 months, and will do 7am, 12p, 6 pm then.

  • We do breakfast (oatmeal), lunch ( a fruit or veggie) and dinner (fruit or veggie). Haven't yet introduced meats - I kinda don't know how because the idea of mushy meat makes me gag. For those that are doing meats, how do you do it?
  • I tried gerber chicken...I ended up feeding it to the cats...thanks for all the responses, Jack loves solids so I'm thinking I will add a breakfast!

  • We started solids maybe two weeks ago and so far it has been just the dinner meal while we eat as a family. LO is in daycare during the day and I don't want new foods to be introduced while she is there and her possibly having a reaction. On the weekends she has two solid meals and on the weekends when we can monitor her is when we introduce a new food.

  • 2 times. Usually lunch and dinner.

  • Our ped said we can feed her as often as she wants.  Right now we're doing once a day at dinner because we're still introducing new things slowly.  My nanny said that she seems really hungry during the and isn't napping well and wanted to add a feeding in the day.  I was planning to wait until 7 months for 2 a day feedings but she's 6.5 so I said ok.  Today was the first day for it.  She really enjoys eating so I figured it can't hurt.  I'm not sure the solids really help (supposedly they don't) but she has really started sleeping better since we started giving them.  Who knows it could be a coincidence.  She's still getting plenty of BM so I'm not worried.
  • We just started giving him a fruit in the morning followed by 4oz bottle and then a vegetable/fruit in the evening when we eat dinner. He is liking the food, but of course is partial to the fruits. :)
  • Good question, I was wondering the same!

We started solids 3 weeks ago and starting this week I'm trying to get to two. There has been no time with my busy schedule, so he was going some days with none. However I hate having no structure! So I decided to do oatmeal and fruit for breakfast and rice and vegetable for dinner.

Once I figure out how to do meats we will move the rice to lunch and do meat for dinner.

  • I try to feed her twice a day too. She loved solids at first but for couple of days she seems to lose her interest. I try to give fruits for breakfast and cereal and/or veggie for dinner. Regarding meats, I am planning to make stew kind of dish. Veggies she likes and lean, triple grinded beef cooked and blended. I did like that for my DS 9 years ago. That is the only way I know. Instead of ground beef, I can use chicken too.
  • If I am eating something and S.is with me, he gets something. He gets mad if he isn't included. So usually he is offered solids at least twice a day. Some days it's 4 of 5 times.

But I might just be giving him and apple slice or orange slice for most of those times because I am lazy. Or a string cheese. Or the crust from my sandwich.

Meat isn't hard. We just give S. a strip of whatever we are eating. He holds it and gums the flavor out. (He doesn't have teeth yet.)

  • Our pedi recommended giving LO solids 3 times a day. My LO loves it!

  • Our pedi also suggested 3 times a day. We are pretty good with dinner and DC does lunch but it's hard to get him breakfast and get out the door in the morning.

  • Right now we are doing stage 1 twice a day. Once at daycare for lunch And then at home for dinner. Pedi recommended 3 times a day on stage 2 but we are working up to that ... Might be a few more weeks.

Definitely lunch at the sitters, maybe 70% dinner at home with us . Some nights are just too busy
    This.
I try new foods at night. I send foods that have been cleared to the sitters. She gives it to him as "lunch".
  • We do 2. Veggies/fruits w his lunch bottle and a serving of oatmeal w his dinner bottle before bed. He will be 7 months on Sunday

  • Those doing 3 times per day: is LO sleeping better/not getting up for a night bottle? I am doing 2x...he is 98th % in all areas and is probably ready for 3x.

I see a huge difference in his sleep. My LO was up to 40 oz of formula daily before starting solids and waking 2-3 times a night. LO now drinks about 24 oz / day and for the most part is STTN or only waking once.
