Newborn in the crib?

We have a R&P basinet in our room, but LO seems to be sleeping better when we put her in her crib. DH and i are also not sleeping great when she's in our room. So far we just use the crib occasionally at night, and snooze in the glider/recliner next to it. Who is already transitioned to the crib in LO's own room? What made it successful for you? Also, we didn't get a monitor yet, because we live in a small condo and didn't think we'd need it. I would get one if we start leaving her in her own room. In that case, is it worth getting a video monitor, to ease some of our new parent nerves?

Re: Newborn in the crib?

  • My baby is still in her RNP in our room, but my twins were in their cribs from day 1 and did just fine! I don't know why I haven't transitioned abby yet. Probably because she sleeps SOOO well in the RNP and I don't want to mess with it, lol. But I should try it soon I think.

I never had a video monitor with my twins, either, because the nursery is attached to my bedroom. I could hear them very easily. But if it makes you feel better, go for it!

  • I still have the baby in our room and probably will for a few months but we also put a queen sized bed in her nursery so it'll be easy to sleep in there, if need be, when we transition her to her crib.

We have a video monitor and I absolutely love it!

  • I too am contemplating this. Mia sleeps much better in her crib than the pack n play.
    I might attempt it tonight

  • We have put DD in her crib from day one. She has sometimes has issues with going down because she would rather sleep on me, but she still sleeps best in her crib.

We have a video monitor. I'm sure we don't really need it but I like to see if she is really awake and crying or just fussing in her sleep. I really like having it.

  • DS2 has been in his crib since we came home from the hospital. We learned from DS1 that DH doesn't sleep well with the baby in the room. DS1 only last a week or 10 days in our room so we just went straight to the crib this time.

  • My LO has been in her crib since day one. She does well, but it was scary for me at firstbut now at two weeks old I feel much better about it. Some nights it doesn't happen, but that's just because she doesn't want to be put down, so even in our room she would be fussy. We have a video monitor and I really don't think I could live without it. It provides so much peace of mind, plus she's a noisy baby so I can see when she's just making noises in her sleep. FWIW, her room is right down the hall and we can hear her without the monitor when she cries, but I still love the monitor.

  • My LO is generally sleeping in her crib in her own room. It's funny, but we discovered it seems she sleeps better in there than in our room--I think there is just too much going on in our bedroom at night (DH and I, as well as both of our dogs, sleep in our bedroom) so she wasn't sleeping well in the PNP. We have a good quality audio only monitor, and I feel very comfortable with it. Since she isn't really rolling around yet, I have it sitting in her crib, and I can actually hear every breath she takes. But, if video makes you feel more secure, I see nothing wrong with that! :)

  • Mine is in my room but will probably be transferred this weekend so it doesn't mess with dh's work. He started a new job Monday so I've been trying to help make sure he is rested so they don't think he is a dud! If it doesn't go well I don't want lo keeping him up. The video monitor is awesome for an older baby or toddler...fine for a NB baby. Nb's don't move much so there isn't much to see on the monitor other than to simply make sure they are still in the crib...which since they aren't mobile, where else would they be!. Once they are moving though it's great to be able to switch it on if they are crying to make sure they aren't getting themselves into trouble and/or climbing out. We use the video much more now with dd than we would with lo.
  • So far LO has only slept in her bassinet next to our bed. I am going to start putting her in her crib for naps next week. We will see how that goes! We have a monitor but it doesn't have video.
  • I put mia to sleep in her crib during the day and at night she's with us in a co sleeper.
  • We had a regular monitor with DD and we were gifted a video monitor for DS. We love the video monitor because it hooks up to our iPhones! So cool. I can even be at work and see him when he's napping. I can also talk to him!

  • Re: the monitor....I totally rolled my eyes at DH when he wanted to get a video monitor.  Our house (at the time, we've since moved) was soooooo small that I knew we'd hear DD from anywhere so I didn't think we'd need ANY monitor.

That said, we did get a video monitor (Motorola) and I love it for peace of mind.  It was especially helpful when she was becoming more active and just to get a peek to see how she was doing (as opposed to just going off cries and guessing).

Obviously people have gone without monitors (esp video monitors) for years, but as a STM, that's probably the one thing I would like for this LO that we don't already have - another video monitor.  Or at least another camera as this one is expandable and 3 or 4 cameras can be on 1 monitor.

  • We ha ve the crib in our room and have used it since we came home from the hospital. Colton sleeps like a champ in it now at first not so much.
  • My kids both went day 1. Even Will with his issues. We use a monitor even though he's right across the hall bc I'm a very heavy sleeper.
  • I'm glad I asked... I knew there would be people who went straight to the crib! I tried the basinet for a couple naps yesterday, and Elise officially hates it. The monitor we ordered should arrive tomorrow, and then I'll be ready to just leave her in the crib. Can't wait!
  • I say if LO sleeps better in the crib then why not? Really the only reason I have dd in a bassinet is because it's in my bedroom and more convenient for me for night time feedings. I hate that I'm going to have to transition her to her crib eventually though.
