Grandparent names

What do your parents/in-laws want to be called?  I remember this being something my Mom thought about my entire pregnancy - has your family been trying to figure out the perfect names?

My parents wanted Granny and Grandpa - but DD1 is probably sticking them with Nini and Papa.  In-laws are Grandma & Grandpa.

Re: Grandparent names

  • My parents are Grandma and Grandpa, my MIL is also Grandma. DHs dad and step-mom are Grandpa Craig and Grandma Leita.

  • this is controversary in my house. My step Mom wants to be Nana (not with a long A, but like the batman jingle...) My MOM wants to be Honey. What?

Yeah, I think they are all going to get vetoed because I can't get behind it, I keep forgetting the names because I think they are so weird, plus I call my DH honey often.

  • kstar83 - Honey?  I think I'd veto that one too!  But, DH calls me that, so it just sounds odd as a grandparent name to me.

torilea - Aww!!  Gramps is adorable!
  • ILs are grandma and grandpa.

My parents are por-por and gung gung (Chinese names for maternal grandparents).

  • You know.. When we had James everyone had names picked out. Then James decided who was what. My parents are grandma (pronounced mama) grandpa Karen is Nanna FIL is pawpaw and mil is maw-maw
I'm was hoping this would happen with my family, but sadly I think DD has already "accepted" what I think are horrible grandparent names for the inlaws.  :(  TBH, I don't know if it's the names that rub me the wrong way or the whole long ordeal of the ILs "deciding" their grandparent names or just the fact that most of the time I can't stand my MIL so no matter what she picked I wouldn't like.  Anyway, MIL is "Gigi" which I think is dumb for a grandmother...would make more sense for a great grandmother (the double G) but maybe it's just me.  As I said, MIL annoys me so much and they way she says it just grates, so...  The only thing that has brought me a little joy is that now DD has a friend named Gigi at school so MIL has become "Big Gigi" which I know know know will COMPLETELY have her up in arms.  Can't wait til DD calls her that in person.  Heh heh heh...

My mother, on the other hand, is sort of....unhappy?....because she wants to be Grammy (Family Nickname) but DD had just for a long time been calling her the Family Nickname part and leaving off the Grammy and my mom is down about it.  I'm like, woman, she's 2 and she doesn't see you that often, we'll work on it and she'll get there....CALM DOWN...she just can't handle the double name right now, I guess.  Ugh.

I've hated the grandparent name thing.  I sort of wish everyone was just grandma first name and grandpa first name to start and that nicknames would have materialized after that.  But watching this whole "deciding" on a nickname was painful.

  • My parents are Mimi and Papa. My MIL is Gigi which kind of annoys me because MY grandmother has been GG since the first great grandchild was born 7 years ago. We (the grandkids) all call her grandmother but the great grandkids call her GG. I told MIL I didn't want her to be Gigi since DS already has GG but she didn't care. I guess it's not that big of a deal but it did annoy me that I specifically asked to to pick a different name but she refused to do so.

I'm not a grandparent but my sisters daughters call me honey, lol. The older one started calling me that when she was about 4 & she's 8 now. When her younger sister started talking she went with honey too. We have no idea where it came from but I'm honey as far as they are concerned.
  • My parents decided to be called the Italian version of grandma and grandpa. So they are called Nonna & Nonno. My ILs are grandma & grandpa but DS1 has called grandpa Papa forever so they are grandma and papa.

  • My parents have always been nana & papa or nan & pop. My husbands mom is Grandma Diane to DD & will just be grandma to DS when he can talk. We rarely see his dad or his wife but they will be grandma & grandpa.
  • MH and I just sorted OUR names today! (Mama and Papa, FWIW.) Not quite at grandparent names yet.

That said, it's looking like gramma for mom, papaw for dad, grammy for MIL and grampa for FIL.

  • My dad and stepmom is grandpa and Grammy (my mom who is deceased is grandma), and in-laws are nana and papa.

yeah I think that I would have greatly preferred the kids coming up with their own versions, then maybe Honey would have been fine. I don't know why I find these so weird, since we have 6 grandparents I was trying to let them choose their own names... I thought it was a nice gesture... apparently it was not.

My mom was in tears at one point because she wanted to be MiMi, but MIL was already MiMi for our nieces, and she felt like it was weird with two mimis....

    oh the drama.

I think it's strange that your mom wants to be called honey as well. Also being another Mimi is nothing to shed tears over. Who's to say that the kids won't decide names of their own for the grandparents when it comes time. Then all this stress your mom is having is for nothing!

  • My dad is pop.. My mom can't decide. We were going with mom mom at first.. But that's what my dad's mom is called and we just think of her when we say it. She is thinking of G ma. Who knows

No idea what DD fathers parent are gonna be called. He hasn't even seen her

  • when I was growing up, my grandparents were always grandpa Courtney (his last name) and grandpa/grandma kendall.

since DH's family is greek, we call DH's grandparents yiayia and papou (greek for grandma and grandpa). It will be a hard habit to break, but now that DH's mom is so excited to be a grandma we're going to let her be the yiayia, and DH's grandma will be proyiayia (greek for great grandma). the papous will remain papou, since we distinguish them with names as well (papou sam, papou domianos, etc). my mom will probably just be grandma or grandma sue, but she might slip into yiayia-hood if LO has an easier time with that. haha

  • My parents are grandma and poppy (not my choice) and mh's are English so they are nanny/nan and grandad.

ILs are French so we call them Grand-mama and Grand-papa. We call my Dad Grandpa. But well see what DD calls them.
Love Grand-mama and Grand-papa!  It sounds so cute!

  • My parents are nanny and grandad, its what we called my moms parents.

DH parents are granna and gramps. However, like pps said, their first grandchild (my niece) calls granna gaga. Who knows what they will all end up being called.
  • DH's parents are Nana and Grandpa.

My parents have more unique names because of my stepdaughter. When DH and I first started dating, they just wanted to be called Barb and Ralph because if for some reason DH and I would have split up, they didn't want SD to feel like she lost her grandma and grandpa. So, because SD couldn't say her R's when she was littler, my mom became Bob. My mom always calls my dad "the old man" so SD started calling him Old Man Ralph.

So, my parents are now Grandma Bob and Old Man Ralph :)

  • My parents are nana and duckie. Mil is grandma, fil isn't really in our life... My dad's nickname is duckie, so we thought it'd be cute to have grand kids call him that. He got the nn from his oldest brother who said my dad used to walk like a duck when he was a baby. His brother died when my dad was around 10, but the nn stuck.
  • My parents are Oma and Opa, it's Dutch and what I call my dad's parents. My Oma is my only remaining grandparent. She wants to be called Oma Tine (pronounced Tina, also Dutch) FIL is Pa and MIL Is Nan (short for nana). Now, step-MIL is called Nana by her grand kids, so we have no clue what our kids will call her. They already have a nana. Who knows. (And who cares)

  • The in-laws will be Baba and Gido (Ukrainian), and my Mom will be Grandma.  She is insisting that her boyfriend since Dec 26 will be called Grandpa Elmer.  Both my Husband and I have quashed that.  Especially since neither of us want to meet this man until we at least have a year of mourning for my Dad.   ...And yes, they were happily married when he passed.
  • My parents are grandma and grandpa, my remaining grandparent is grammy, and MH parents are farmor and farfar (Danish). MH grandparents are oldemor and oldefar.

  • My mom is Grammy and my dad is Bumpy...
He was originally named Grumpy because he is a big ole grump unless he was around DD1, but she couldn't pronounce it- so she went with Bumpy! Now 3 Grandkids later and he still goes by Bumpy.
Mil goes by MiMi and Fil goes by PawPaw

But get this- SIL has a grand baby and goes by KiKi! Yep! Really!

And we knew someone that went by Peaches! Lol
  • My inlaws wanted grandma and grandpa. My dad wanted grandpa (his name) and my mom decided on Mimi. All were like but we will wait to see what dd decides she wants to call us. It's been so cute seeing her come up with each of their names. She calls my mom Mimi, my dad bapa, mil nanu and FIL papa. She even has nicknames for my brother, SIL and nephew as she can't say throt names correctly yet. It's so cute .
