TTC with Hypothyroidism

Hello, I am new to this message board thing, so bare with me. I am 24 years old and have been TTC since June 2012 after my miscarriage in April of 2012. In October 2013, after lots of test, I found out my thyroid was swollen and my levels were crazy. My doctor started me on Levothyroxine right away. My thyroid has returned to almost normal size and my levels are basically normal. I am not sure what else I can do to help. I am just wondering if there is anyone who has struggled with the similar situation and could give me some insight and/or hope. I am thinking of seeing another doctor and begin the infertility run... but I don't want to get ahead of myself. Prior to all of this I had no idea I had a thyroid issue, so it's all a surprise. Hoping I can find some positive outlook! Thank you:)

Re: TTC with Hypothyroidism

  • Welcome! I was diagnosed with Hashimotos in April of last year. My cycles were very irregular prior to starting treatment (I started with an ND first before being diagnosed) but I've responded very well to Synthroid. I even have regular cycles and a "normal" LP now! I've found that the combo of Synthroid and TCM have really helped to get my thyroid under control, so if you're looking for something else to help, I'd suggest looking into that too :)

As for seeking medical help, that's entirely up to you. In our case, we're also dealing with severe MFI, though initially we thought that we only had female issues. Without all the testing, we would have wasted even more time and heartache, you know? Approximately 30% of couples dealing with infertility have a combination of both male and female issues, so you really need to both be checked out to make sure that you're getting the best possible treatment.

Once your thyroid is under control and your TSH is under 2.5 (for TTC/pregnancy) it *shouldn't* cause issues TTC (though anything is possible, really). Just make sure to have it tested regularly, particularly once you're pregnant, as they want to make sure your levels are optimal for creating and sustaining a baby.

    Good luck to you!

Sorry you are here--- I have Hashimotos and hypothyroid.  I would suggest getting a really good endocronologist (if you haven't already) who can help you with your thyroid.  A primary physician or obgyn can treat it but Endos are specialist and really know the ends and outs of it. The thyroid is so interconnected with the rest of your body.   I see mine every 6 weeks while TTC and will see her monthly while pregnant.   When managed it shouldn't cause you any problems but when not it can really mess you up in lot's of areas.

    Good luck!

It sounds like you should be in a good place for TTC. The hard part is getting things leveled out. After that it's just a matter of maintenance, especially when you get a bfp. Make sure your docs are monitoring you closely!!

    ((hugs)) and good luck!

Thanks so much ladies. There is a lot of maintenance for sure and I honestly didn't understand the whole idea of it to begin with. Hashimoto's? What exactly is that...? Prior to this Hypothyroidism I have ALWAYS had a regular period. I mean since my miscarriage it was like clockwork, however, it didn't change much just moved to middle of the month instead of end. I am all caught up with levels and medicine and that sorts. I even ovulate according to discharge and especially tests. So I am just a little stumped. I plan to investigate an endocrinologist but like I said am extremely new to this. Not even sure what too expect (except a BFP fingers crossed). Another question I have is how long did it take you all to feel normal after starting synthroid or levothyroxine?

I truly appreciate your reposes good or bad. It helps so much to talk about it and get advice. Definitely a blessing:) Thank youuu!

I, too have Hashi and I'm convinced its interfering with my fertility...yet I am on meds and my levels seem to be normal....

@tjg5275 - I found that unless my TSH was/is in a specific range, then my LP was/is very short. What do your charts look like? It's possible that it's interfering with your cycles, but there could be other things at play as well. If you've been trying for over a year, it's best to get everything checked out. My thyroid is jacked, but it turns out we're also dealing with severe MFI, which we wouldn't have known about otherwise.

As an aside, most women here are TTC their first, so they would appreciate a picture warning (as per the blurb at the top of the page) for your adorable little guy :)

  • I am not entirely sure, but in my case it is genetic. Most of the women on my dad's side have a problem with their thyroid.
  • We have MFI and just found out this week during lab work with the RE that my FSH is high, follicle low and my thyroid is slightly low. With my primary doctor she said my thyroid was fine but with fertility it's not up to par. Because of that I'm taking Synthroid. I never though I had a slight thyroid issue. It sucks but whatever it takes to get a BFP I will do it, I also gave an autoimmune disorder psoriatic arthritis and psoriasis. Maybe that had something to do with it?
