Re: Would you have changed anything?

  • I think we did it at pretty much the right time. I wish other people would have chosen to have babies around the same time as uS, though. My kids won't have any cousins close in age or family friend's kids.

Yes and no. I had just found an amazing job after I got pregnant and we weren't as financially stable as we should have been with DH just starting his business. We waited 4 years after we got married so I do feel like we got to know each other pretty well by the time DS came into the picture. We were on the same page of just seeing what would happen, which is where DH is at now. He's ok with practicing :)
  • I'm glad we started trying when we did. Still took us a couple of years to get Alex and I always wanted to be a mom by age 30. DH and I met relatively late in life (at 27 and 30).

Looking back, we always wonder what we did with all of our free time pre-kids. Had I known how little time you really have once you have kids, I would probably have tried to see more places and have more adventures. Now we'll just wait until the kids are old enough to join us for adventures :-)

ETA- I posted a response but then I noticed that the weirdest thing happened...my username changed and my entire profile reset.
My old username was KELLYR33486.  My username somehow defaulted to my e-mail....has this happened to anyone? How do I get my old profile back?

  • I keep typing and deleting my answer. Things didn't happen the way I wanted with IF but looking back the timing worked out for the best. I just wish I had enjoyed my last 2 child free yrs more.

  • @mtb21 I hope the Lansinoh bottles work! They were our lifesaver when I had to come back to work!

  • Not really and DH and I were young when I got pregnant the first time. I was just about to turn 25 and DH was 25. We did travel every year doing cruises and such, we went out most weekends, and saved fairly well beforehand. We were very mature for our ages though and always planned for the future.

I did! Hopefully she gets back to me soon!

    My original response:

DH and I have been together since we were 18, married at 25 and DS was born when we were 28, so we had a good amount of time together baby-free but I would have *liked* to have maybe waited another year or so but DH was ready and we got pregnant very quickly.

I had only been working less then a year when I found out I was pregnant so I think that is where I would have liked more time...my career...and traveling,

MTB21- I feel like I have those feelings more often then I should.  Sometimes I feel envious of my "DINK" friends and wish I had enjoyed those times more.

  • I'm very happy with our timing.  We were married for a little over 3 years by the time DD was born and most importantly, we took our much-desired big trip to Italy the summer before I got pregnant and we finished our house projects at the beginning of my pregnancy with her.  All in all, the timing was perfect.

@AnotherDreamer‌ I am sorry you went through so much. I hope this topic didn't come off as insensitive, I really did not mean it that way. KellyR.. it's nice to be understood. I was always interested in hospital pharmacy, but I didn't apply for residencies because it was another year of school. Looking back now that sounds so stupid, a year is nothing. I still think about doing it someday, but I know it will be so much harder with kids.
I didn't do a residency either...at the time I didn't want to do it because of the time and I wanted to start paying off my loans ASAP.  I also never really loved hospital pharmacy.  I was even offered a job before I took the boards at a local hospital (rare without a residency)... but I turned it down and I now work at a chain.  I don't know how it is in Canada but there can be a pretty sizable pay discrepancy between hospital and retail....and I knew that once I had kids I would be part time so I wanted to maximize every minute away from them so I went with retail.
  • Similiar to another poster, I wish I would have met DH earlier in life.  I always wanted to be a younger mom, but thank god I didn't settle :)  I was 30 when we got married and it took us over a year to get pregnant with DD.  I had DD at 31 and DS at 33.  DH and I did travel a lot when we were dating/TTC so I'm glad we had that time together.  We still travel with the LO's but just not as often as we'd like.  I am glad too in a way that it happened later in life as we were both financially stable and have secure jobs.

  • I'm also a yes and no. DS1 was born when I was 32, and DS2 when I was 34. I wouldn't have wanted to wait too much longer before trying to have children, because I don't want my age to force us to close the door on having a third. I would have liked to have traveled more extensively with DH before having babies, but other than that no regrets.

  • We're happy with the timing. We were married for over 7 years (together for over 11) when we had DS1. That time serves as the foundation of our family and helps us deal with the fact that we have basically zero "couple time" right now. We spent our 20s focusing on each other and our careers, building our financial security, traveling, etc. When anybody asks for advice, I always tell them to err on the side of waiting to have kids (if time and fertility is on their side, of course). We just wanted to be done having kids before we turned 35.
