Bleaching used prefolds with other laundry

Hi Ladies ... it's been quite a while since I've posted on the CD board ... I'm finished building my stash and waiting for LO to arrive to use them :)

I bought 24 used GMD newborn size prefolds a while back, and have heard from multiple CDers (this board and other places) that I should wash them with about 1/4 cup of bleach to ensure there is no yest or bacteria sticking around on them.

I have a top loader, so it's pretty big. Should I just wash the 24 prefolds with bleach by themselves in one load? Or does it makes sense to throw them in with some other laundry I need to bleach? Will that dilute the bleach too much to be effective? I want to do this properly, but I don't want to waste water, so I was thinking of bleaching them with my white bed sheets. But again, I'm not sure if that will make the bleach ineffective for the used prefolds.

Thanks ladies!!

  • Personally I would do just the dipes.  Then you can be certain that the bleach to water to diaper ratio is just right.
  • Loading the player...
  • Thanks ladies!! To be safe, I think I'll just wash the prefolds alone.

  • Doesn't your washer have different sizes? I know my top loader has 5 sizes. So I'd just turn it to where it looks right with just the prefolds.

Shockingly, no. My old one did (small, medium, large loads) this one has "soiled" settings (heavy, medium, light), but that does't seem to adjust the amount of water being used.

Weird! In that case I'd maximize the load like your talking about.
