Multiples

Pure Curiosity

I probably have a higher chance of giving birth to a puppy than multiples (not that I suspect multiples in the least bit for this pregnancy), but I'm still curious...

When did the doc confirm a multiple pregnancy?

What were your changes of having multiples?

If you had a singleton pregnancy and a multiple pregnancy, were they hugely different?

(I promise I won't post here again unless I turn out to be a multi-momma too)

Re: Pure Curiosity

  • When did the doc confirm a multiple pregnancy? 8 weeks.

What were your changes of having multiples? 3%

If you had a singleton pregnancy and a multiple pregnancy, were they hugely different? I haven't, but based off of all of the other MoMs on this board, their pregnancies seem to have been vastly different than their singleton pregnancies.

  • When did the doc confirm a multiple pregnancy?  7 week ultrasound at my RE's office

What were your chances of having multiples? Because I did fertility treatment and had multiple follicles when I did my IUI (with 60M sperm) I suspect higher than if it was spontaneous w/o intervention, which is 3%, but probably not much higher since I still only had a 20% chance of getting pregnant with IUI anyways (and had done other IUIs with multiple follicles and not gotten pregnant at all).

If you had a singleton pregnancy and a multiple pregnancy, were they hugely different? Not in the beginning, but when DD was born at 40 weeks 3 days I was only measuring 38 weeks. I'm 34 weeks measuring 41 weeks - and I feel it. I'm bigger, more uncomfortable, more tired, but I also am chasing a toddler a lot of the day.

  • When did the doc confirm a multiple pregnancy? At 6 weeks, we had  empty sacs measuring 5. At 7 weeks we had 2 heartbeats.

What were your changes of having multiples? 50%, I guess. We transferred 2 embryos with an IVF cycle.

If you had a singleton pregnancy and a multiple pregnancy, were they hugely different? I am only 13 weeks so far, but uh, yeah. Not too bad yet, but different enough that I know this isn't going to be super fun :)

When did the doc confirm a multiple pregnancy? Because of my history and being unsure of my dates I asked for an early u/s, so we knew this time at 7 weeks. With my first set didn't know until 15 weeks.

What were your chances of having multiples? Not sure, but my mother is a fraternal twin and I'd already had twins, so I think pretty freaking high. (FWIW both sets of twins and DD were conceived naturally, but I just release two eggs once in awhile I guess!)

If you had a singleton pregnancy and a multiple pregnancy, were they hugely different? Hugely different. I started showing around 8-10 weeks this time, I'm always exhausted, lots of pressure "down there," and just overall super uncomfortable in comparison. I also have way more ultrasounds and see my OB more often.

Suspected multiples at 4 weeks due to high beta levels, confirmed 2 HBs at 6.5 weeks at RE office. Well we transferred 3 embryos, so anywhere from 0-100% EXTREMELY different from my singleton. I was hyper stimulated so had gained about 15 lbs in water in the first 2 weeks between transfer and confirmation. By the time that subsided I was gaining bloat from the babies. With my single I was very active up to 40+ weeks! this time around I can barely walk up the stairs without getting winded. The quick weight gain has just caused my muscles and joints to revolt.

This...I'm only 20 weeks, but the rapid weight gain has done amazing things to my body...My body consistently aches all over like when you have the flu.  Daily, I feel like I've been hit by a truck, and I know it's only going to get worse.  And the breathing thing, it's ridiculously difficult to catch my breath.  LOL

  • When did the doc confirm a multiple pregnancy? At our 6w ultrasound.   We were SHOCKED.  Our beta numbers were low-ish, and they hadn't followed a super quick doubling progression at the beginning.  We thought we were on track for a singleton.

What were your chances of having multiples? I'm not sure.   We did IVF and put back two Day-3 embryos so they were better than the average, but given our egg quality and numbers we certainly didn't feel that good about our chances of having ANY babies.

If you had a singleton pregnancy and a multiple pregnancy, were they hugely different? This is our first pregnancy so we don't know.  I sense I am more tired than the average singleton pregnancy though, and I definitely am rounding out a bit faster already.

  • When did the doc confirm a multiple pregnancy?

At 6w3d. We were beyond shocked. I had a MMC 4 months prior so I was just praying for a healthy baby. Didn't even think of twins.

What were your changes of having multiples?

3% is what I've read, we weren't IVF or anything.

If you had a singleton pregnancy and a multiple pregnancy, were they hugely different?

So far, the nausea level has been the same, hunger is greater, food aversions the same, fatigue is greater. I've already got a noticeable bump at 11w6d.

  • I was 7.5 weeks and having extreme RLP, and my family doctor (I hadn't contacted my midwife yet since it was so early) sent me to the ER to rule out an ectopic pregnancy, and we found our we were having twins.

While I do have some twins in my family, none are in the female line, so my chances were whatever the chances of a spontaneous twin pregnancy are.

I am only 11 weeks in, but so far this pregnancy has been about 100 times harder than with DS. I have had extreme fatigue and morning sickness and a lot of abdominal pain. Hoping it is turning around now.

When did the doc confirm a multiple pregnancy? 7w 5d ultrasound at the RE's office

What were your changes of having multiples? Probably higher than normal for fraternal since we did IVF and transferred 2 embryos but apparently we had to be different and are instead having identicals so I guess 3% like everyone else

If you had a singleton pregnancy and a multiple pregnancy, were they hugely different? Never had a pregnancy stick before so everything is new but comparing with family maybe the nausea is worse and maybe the bloat/bump has started a little early. So far everything else seems to be fairly normal except for the extra OB and MFM visits.

What were your chances of having multiples?  I don't really know.  I'm pretty sure my RE said 20%We did IUI and I was on Clomid + Gonal-f.

When did the doc confirm a multiple pregnancy?
    7-ish weeks at RE.

What were your chances of having multiples?
I believe it was 20-25% with the IVF. We transferred 2 embryos and both stuck.

If you had a singleton pregnancy and a multiple pregnancy, were they hugely different?
This one has been very different. Much sicker in the beginning, then I felt great with an insatiable appetite and cravings, and now I'm hitting the strong discomfort and lack of mobility stage much earlier. With my singleton everything was much more even throughout and I was fairly active up until my due date. Now I'm 29 weeks and struggling to do much of anything.

I don't think many (if any) of us really believe the bolded...why else would one walk into a MoM's group asking about odds and differences between a singleton/multiples pregnancy? It's like asking a pregnant woman what symptoms she had before getting a BFP.

When did the doc confirm a multiple pregnancy?
6w 2/4d (my boys implanted approximately two days apart, based on growth) - we had a dating scan early on because my cycles had been irregular for a year.

What were your changes of having multiples?
I have a rare medical condition that caused damage to my ovaries during previous pregnancies; we believe the damage may have played a role in causing the multiple egg release, but we cannot be sure. Otherwise, the standard 3% chance everyone else has.

If you had a singleton pregnancy and a multiple pregnancy, were they hugely different?
Only by the number of complications I encountered - I had GD and Pre-E with the boys, and I had neither of those with my girls who are both singletons (older than the boys)

  • We found out at about 7w. I was sure of my dates but my OB offered a dating u/s and I took her up on it.

My boys are spontaneous fraternal twins with marginal family history (one set of boy twins on my mom's side 4 generations ago).

The pregnancy was very different. Everything was much more intense, that's prob the best way to explain it.

  • I just found out at 5 and 5 weeks. I did IVF so get monitored more routinely.

I had 4 embyors implanted so I knew the chances were there, but not sure exact stats. Based on my  age, the chance of getting pregnant was probably really low in the first place

  • We found out at the 20 week ultrasound.

We have identical girls. I think the odds of conceiving identical twins is about 1% and no family history required.

I have no experience with a singleton birth.

  • When did the doc confirm a multiple pregnancy? 6 weeks, 2 days

What were your changes of having multiples? 10% (clomid)

If you had a singleton pregnancy and a multiple pregnancy, were they hugely different? Vastly. Very easy singleton pregnancy, no issues, delivered at 38 weeks vaginally. I have had nothing but issues with these boys. I have been down for most of the pregnancy (modified bed rest at 18 weeks, hospital bed rest at 27 and still counting). Twins really take a toll on your body much more than a singleton.

Exactly. I cringed. I love reading thru everyone's stories bc I think they are amazing and fun as a MoM.
  • Thank you for the answers and I apologize for offending those that I did. I've always had a curious mind and love learning from people. I only know 1 woman who only had a twin pregnancy so she couldn't compare singleton and multiple. All my Googling didn't turn up the answers that were as genuine as they were here.

  • When did the doc confirm a multiple pregnancy?  An ultrasound during the 7th week showed two heartbeats.  At that time we didn't know if they were mono-mono or mono-di.  We found out around 9 weeks they were mono-di!

What were your chances of having multiples? We did IVF and transferred 2 embryos, the RE gave us a 25% chance of multiples.   However only one embryo took and it split, so we are having identical twins.  The RE said the chance of this happening was 1-4%.

If you had a singleton pregnancy and a multiple pregnancy, were they hugely different? Hugely different.  My singleton was first, and I was very hormonal, crying daily.  I also vomited the entire pregnancy, but I was active and working towards the end.  I have not vomited or cried as much with this pregnancy, but I am 100% more uncomfortable, and can barely move.  I also have had awful heartburn and constipation with this pregnancy.  I had to stop working in my 34th week.

Just going to inject re: motives... I started reading all about the differences between singleton and twin pregnancies between when I had my first and when I had my boys (10yrs apart... with one singleton in the middle) during plenty of years when I wasn't even pregnant, at all.. I also asked questions about IF treatments even though I've still never had IF intervetions... I ask about high-risk conditions I never had - all of these, all also still while I wasn't even pregnant / no reason to be concerned or believe or think that I did or might one day experience them... Some people genuinely are "just curious" about things that they haven't experienced or don't have people close to them who have experienced them to learn from... I get redirecting people to search for old posts/forums/website resources... but jumping on people and saying that they couldn't possibly *just want to learn* is making just as much of a ridiculous assumption about that person as people who make prejudice assumptions about you, as a MoM. At least this person just came in and asked questions instead of running off on the "OMG I'm showing at 5 weeks preggers tell me it's twins!!!" tangent...

But would you go on the infertility board and ask them a bunch of questions about treatments because you're curious and want to learn?

I honestly find it very hard to believe that someone would get a BFP, then a few weeks later ask questions about multiples on two different boards if they didn't suspect something.

No, but I have pretty good online etiquette and search skills, and chose to read what was already out there before asking questions directly. A large majority of what I learned that permitted me to empathize with others who were experiencing things I had not or could not experience was gained by reading threads that were started by people who did ask those kinds of questions. I completely understand getting upset with trolls, liars, and those who seem to fantasize, envy, or criticize our experiences... but that doesn't mean that we need to be flippant toward people who ask benign questions, regardless of the motives we believe they have.

  • Confirmed twins at my 6w ultrasound. Not even the vaguest idea that it might be a possibility before seeing that!

Chances were about 1/80. I have spontaneous twins, identical.

No other pregnancies here, but the twin one was difficult despite its brevity.

  • These type of questions don't bother me. Maybe because I'm a twin mom newbie? But I've seen the "omgz is it twins?!" posts and this didn't rub me that way at all.

We found out they were twins nearly 6 weeks, which is really early but we did IVF so it was scheduled early! We had a very good chance of IVF working, and a 30% chance of having twins. This is my first pregnancy so I have nothing to compare it to, though I'm hoping when we eventually have baby #3 it'll be a breeze :)

  • When did the doc confirm a multiple pregnancy? 12 weeks, they didn't see twins at my 7 week ultrasound.

What were your changes of having multiples? No clue... whatever the chance is of having identical twins without any medical interventions.

If you had a singleton pregnancy and a multiple pregnancy, were they hugely different? Yes, my singleton pregnancy was much easier and much less dramatic.  I can go into details if you'd like but they found out via ultrasound that one of my twins would need a life saving surgery upon delivery, and a lot of things came along with that, which I changed a lot of things I had planned out.

Yep. With the exception of one, they thought we're oversensitive divas...I think one's words were "boo f-ing hoo". I was tempted to call her on it considering she used to post on TTGP and I don't recall her having a problem with the flaming drive bys and "am I pregnant" posters are given there.      What were your chances of having multiples?  There are no twins on my side of the family so pretty low, but someone told me that if you conceive while still breastfeeding you have a higher likelihood of twins.  (I think it was around 12%)

If you had a singleton pregnancy and a multiple pregnancy, were they hugely different?  I'm not very far along, but it noticed I was a lot more exhausted and I have felt sick (haven't thrown up yet, fx). Last pregnancy I was tired but didn't feel sick.

-not really. I was bigger and more aches and pains but that's about it. I got out on modified bedrest with the twin pregnancy because one of them had quit growing. But other than that, both were complication-free.
