Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Moving - Opinions needed - LONG

This isn't really a 9-12mnth old question but could use some fresh perspective. We've lived in the same apt in NYC for a combined total of almost 15yrs, we found out recently our landlord is selling the building, it used to be a private home, so there's a good chance a buyer will want to convert it back to that. We have some money saved up, but I'd like to have a little more padding before we committ to buying a place, we are also not sure when the building will get sold. In NYC it could go really quick or could drag on for months, there's no way to tell.

We found a brand new building that fits all our criteria but is in a completely different neighborhood, we'd have to eventually more DS daycare, which we really happy with right now and it's about double the rent we pay. We can swing it but it will cut down on how much we can put in savings every month. We have to sign the lease tomorrow and I'm starting to have 2nd thoughts. We can stay in our current apartment until we're given notice, and continue to save but we don't have any idea what will be avaiable on the market at that time.

Friends are in two camps, the ones without kids are telling us to wait it out and that we should pay the cheaper rent while we can and we'll find something when we need to move, the ones with kids say move now, its too stressful and too much of a hassle to have to look at the last minute. I know it's hard to factor in looking for a place if you're not from the city, NYC apt hunting is ridiculous, but if you have an opinion or have been in a similar situation, would love to hear what you would do.

  • How much notice will you be given? Do you have a lot of criteria when it comes to finding a place? That's tough. I understand not wanting the stress of having to move quickly with kids (which we basically just did 3 months ago), but double rent is a pretty significant difference.
  • We're only required to get 30 days notice, but I think we could probably stretch it a little longer. We're looking for a 2 bedroom, and the market is tight for that kind of rental, I hear that the summer months are horrible because of all the new grads, the prices tend to go up. We pay WAY below market rate right now, so unfortunately we will be paying quite a bit more no matter where we rent, I just wasn't anticipating it being that much more. Thats why in some ways I think we'd just be postponing the inevitable anyway.
