I'm starting to build my "stash" of BG 4.0s and wonder...babies in our families are usually born around 8-9#...will the BGs be okay for a newborn? Or do I really need a newborn stash, too? Thanks, Ladies!
Probably not. BGs typically fit around 10 lbs, but newborns have such tiny little legs, any OS dipe is going to gap. NB dipes are worn for a short period though, so remember the resale value is pretty darn good.
TTC with PCOS since November 2009
IUI#1 Femara/Ovidrel (cd 3-7) = BFP, m/c IUI#2 Femara/Ovidrel (cd 5-9) = BFN IUI#3 Femara/Ovidrel (cd 3-7) = BFP! beta #1 11/23 = 270, P4 = 75 beta #2 11/28 = 2055 Our daughter E was born 7/29/2012! Surprise, our 2nd daughter P was born 5/22/14!
My DD is 9 weeks old and just about 10 lbs. Her BGs are starting to fit better and better now but she has skinny legs so it has been tough. I didn't want to buy NB CDs so late in the game and we were gifted some disposables so I just used those for the first few weeks.
Yeah, newborn sizes are not really for the weight, but more for the leg size. Even a larger newborn would have a hard time fitting in one size because that weight is not (usually) in the legs.
Totally worth it to get newborn diapers! Plus, they're adorable and tiny.
DD fit into her OS diapers at about 9-10 lbs. She was two months old.
I just visited a baby that is 3 weeks and about 9 lbs to show the mom how to use prefolds. There is no way OS diapers would have fit him. Newborns are just shaped differently. They're much more 'squishy' or something...
I was gifted a stash if 24 BG 4.0 at my baby shower and that is what I use now. I never diversified. But, I didn't start using them till about 5 weeks or so. My kid has enormous thighs and I probably could have used then earlier, but I was not ready
DH and I were both 8+ lb babies, but our son was 6lb 9oz! I'm glad I made the decision late in my pregnancy to get a bunch of prefolds and Thirsties Duo Wrap covers in size 1. They work great! We have 24 prefolds and only have 5 Thirsties covers -- you can wipe them down and reuse, as long as poop didn't get outside the prefold. DS is now six weeks, and he's still a little peanut with slim legs -- it'll be a while still before he's in his OS!

But I had a NB stash and loved it and didn't regret it one bit.
I'd get flats and thirsties duo size 1 covers. So that you can maximize your NB stash for later.
If your baby fits into OS early you can use the flats to stuff pockets, as burp cloths, and dish rags! Super versatile!
