crying while sleeping?

Hello Moms!
Does anybody else's LO burst out suddenly in a shrieking cry while sleeping in the night? She's been sound asleep for the past 20 minutes, then BAM! A high piercing wail like i'm in pain for about 5 seconds, and then out cold again. Could it be gas? A baby nightmare? My DH calls it the 'death rattle' before she finally goes down. It scares me!

Re: crying while sleeping?

  • My LO doesn't do it, but DD does and she's 18 months. She doesn't do it all the time, but it scares the shit out of me when I'm sleeping and hear a high pitched scream. She usually screams, finds her paci and is still sleeping. Sometimes I think she does it because she's teething and other times I have no idea. Sorry I don't really have any advice.

  • YES! I ran from the living room to his room to check on DS and when I picked him up to console him it made it worse. After a few minutes he calmed down. I was a bunch of nerves!!!! I read that this is likely night terrors and when it happens not to pick them up and instead just place your hand on the baby and tell them that you're there and they'll calm down. This happened again and that's what I did and he calmed down right away.

DD does this sometimes. But hers isn't always a real shriek. Sometimes she just whimpers in her sleep. I have no idea what it is.

Eta - I also usually just go to her and rub her belly gently and tell her I'm there. It goes away fast but I agree that this seems to be better than picking her up.

DD (11 weeks old) has been doing this for a few weeks now.  You think she's awake, but then you get to her and she's sound asleep.  Most of the time just turning her mobile back on to give her the music calms her down if she's still restless.  If she still looks like she needs comforting, I'll gently rub her side or stroke her cheek.

  • Yup, he will be sound asleep and let out one of those "I'm about to die!!" shrieks.  It lasts less than 2 seconds and he never even opens his eyes.  He goes right back to sleep, usually with a frown on his face.  On the rare occasion that he opens his eyes I just tell him  "Mama's here" in a soothing tone and he falls right back to sleep.

  • Oh yeah! LO does this and it freaks me out. I have gotten used to it. He also whimpers and soft cries sometimes. Other times he's laughing :)
  • Yes! DH is a very vivid dreamer and I think DD is too. She will scrunch up her face in the saddest expression and let out a wail that breaks my heart. The first time she did it I tried to wake her up it was so sad! But now I just whisper to her that mom and dad are here and love her. It makes me feel better and she seems to calm down.
