cord blood banking?

im sure this has been asked but i just started thinking about it and wondering others opinions of this and/or how common is this? I decided against it with my first son last year, but since then have had a close family member have a bout with leukemia.. so im starting to wonder if this is something to consider. if money were no issue this wouldn't be a question.. but money is an issue, so i have to weigh the pros and cons. i know everyone will have their own opinion but i'm interested in the different viewpoints. thanks!

Re: cord blood banking?

  • We decided on delayed cord clamping instead but if we weren't going that route, we were considering donating rather than banking. I think it's more likely to be useful that way.

    Yup. This for us too.

  • I donated with DS, but I am thinking about banking with this one or either I will do delayed cord clamping.

I will not donate again.  I got really pissed at my OB because I repeatedly asked for the placenta to be tested (pretty much standard with intra-uterine growth restriction), but because I had previously filled out the paperwork to have it donated, my OB sent it with them instead of to the lab.  I really felt taken advantage of, like my wishes were not respected and I missed out on valuable medical information.

  • I discussed with my OB about delayed cord clamping and she is on board.  She said sometimes there is enough left to donate after that, so I went ahead and filled out the paperwork just in case, but that there probably won't be.

DONATE!  A good friend of mine's sister had leukemia and her life was saved by the donation program!  In NC, Duke is the location to use.  Also, the statistical chances of your baby using their own cord blood is slim.  Sometimes the child's body rejects it's own and needs a donor despite banking it.  It's worth calling and getting information from both sides to make an informed decision.

  • This might be a dumb question, but is there an option to delay cord cutting during a c-section?

  • Delayed clamping for us here too. I don't remember how long it was before we cut DD's, probably 15-20 minutesish. In hospital it's unlikely they will let you go that long but even a couple minutes is beneficial.

If you dried to donate, check with your hospital. It's not an option at ours.

  • We donated before and will donate again. The liklihood of needing it AND being able to use it is low. Technology and medicine is advancing so quickly, that if my child needed something down the line, a donor bank will probably be able to be used. Plus if my child never needs something like that, it could save someone else.

Exactly what I was going to say. The hospital has to have a relationship with a cord blood banking site, or at least one nearby. There isn't one in our city, so our hospital isn't able to handle donations or "deposits."
