Dry Scalp

My LO has a really dry flaky scalp. The doctor says it's just cradle cap and should go away during the summer when we're not constantly running the heat in the house and that his son had it until he was two. It's not gross like if you do a Google Image search of cradle cap (huge mistake, by the way) but enough to bother me. Any of you have recommendations for getting rid of the nastiness.

Re: Dry Scalp

  • Thanks, ladies. I need to get a scrubby brush for her little head.

  • If oil and gentle massage don't work, you can try anti dandruff shampoo. Let it sit 5+ minutes. Careful with the eyes.
  • We put baby oil on his head 30 min prior to his bath. While in bath scrub his head good and wash out with shampoo. It was gone after 2x.

  • We used selsun blue and it worked after a couple washes. Just be careful to keep it out of her eyes.

  • We use mustela on Grayson and it cleared his up super fast!

  • These are a lot of great idea. Tomorrow morning it's a grudge match: me vs. cradle cap.

I do suggest not going to crazy the first time, if the scalpe gets red then stop and do some more the next day. Just speaking from experience...

  • I'm gonna piggyback OP. How much hair did your LO have when you put oil on their scalp? Ellie's got a head full. It's about 4 inches long on top (only like 1 inch on the back). Can I use coconut oil on her scalp without her hair looking greasy and nasty like I don't bathe her?

  • We had this problem.  It wasn't a huge concern (like the images you referenced) but it flaked and made her look like she had awful dandruff all the time (she has a head full of hair since birth).  We put baby oil on initially to loosen and softly scratch it up. The next two nights I used head and shoulders carefully.  Two months later it came back.  I only used head and shoulders once then, softly scratched up the rest.  A couple days later I used the shampoo again for good measure.  Haven't seen it since.  My biggest concern was how do we get rid of it without making her hair fall out.  I didn't want to be scratching at it every night.  The head and shoulders was great I think.
