Getting LO used to babywearing?

I need some advice! Kara is just over 2 weeks old and I need to start babywearing so that I can have two hands again! Problem is, she HATES the Moby! I think she wants to stretch out her legs and be able to look around more. I've tried it a few times (tried different holds, too) for a couple of minutes but she gets super fussy as soon as she realizes she's in the Moby.

Should I stick it out and keep trying? Or should I try something simpler, like a sling? I'm really leaning toward that since it would be easier for BFing on demand, it's lighter fabric for our warm climate, and getting her into and out of it would be easier, too. This is the one I'm considering, any experience with it? https://www.mayawrap.com/shop/maya-wrap-baby-sling-new.html

  • I started using the boba when LO was around 2 weeks.  She loves it and so do I because it puts her to sleep!

@farmboyswife did you just keep putting him in the carriers and trying it until it clicked for him? I can do that... But the Moby is really cumbersome to tie on just to have her in for two minutes. :-/

Dude I can barely handle having one kid yelling at me, and that's one of her four main activities: eat, poop, sleep, scream.

  • Try putting her in it when she is asleep/sleepy.

  • I love this post. I need advice too. I just started trying with my 2 week old today too and he hates it. I want to try it when he's really sound asleep but that moby is ridiculous to put on.
  • I put Brooklyn in the Moby for the first time at 2 weeks old. I was nervous she'd hate it but she passed out on my chest instantaneously. I put it on while she was dozing off in her swing and just slid her in.

  • I tried the moby yesterday and I hated it. I put E up in the ergo with infant insert instead and he slept the entire time. I'd just keep trying. Or if you have a baby wearing group with a lending library I'd look them up to try out some different ones before you commit to buying something else.

  • @SassyFlats‌ did you look into good wraps post section? I want to start trying today.

  • @pepperedmoth I just have the Moby and didn't use it until she was 2 weeks old. It ties higher than my incision so I'm okay with it now. However, I think a sling would be much better for wearing early.

  • Have you tried to put her in after you feed her? Also when a baby fusses when placing in a carrier try to walk around bounce them and shhsh them. The Moby maybe overwhelming fabric for your little one. A Maya ring sling is good option since it is single pass over baby.

I LOVE ringslings, but hated the Maya. The padded shoulder was so bulky and I felt like I couldn't get a snug fit with it. I love my Sakura Bloom slings, but they are $$$. Another option would be a wrap conversion or Sleeping Baby Productions. Ideally, something you could try and return if it doesn't work for you.

  • @Nickiechan‌ how old do you try baby wearing? LO is 1 week today is it too early?

it is never too young to babywear. What carrier are you using?

  • Ds hated the ktan at first. I kept trying to put him in, especially just to practice getting him in cause I sucked at it. Once I got better at actually getting him in, I tried when he was sleepy and he stayed asleep. Now it's like baby NyQuil. As soon as he is in he start blinking cause he can't keep his eyes open. I will say it doesn't work during his 7-9pm fussy period. So if you are trying during a normal fussy time, maybe wait until your lo is a bit more agreeable. Ds fights it like crazy during his fuss time.
  • I tried a front carrier on my little Nicholas a couple of weeks ago (then 2 weeks old) - didn't happen. He fussed & screamed at me. And that was from being sound asleep. I originally wanted to try a sling, but I am rather small and my LO is a chunky tall baby, and where we live is warm, so I changed my mind, b/c I think he'll get too hot. However, I'm hoping once he's a little older, I can try the carrier once again and maybe he'll have a better reaction.
  • DS just hit 7lbs so we tried our Gemini yesterday. She didn't mind it, but it didn't seem safe yet (she needs to be bigger). I'd love to try a sling/Moby, but am curious to see how useful others are finding it with their littles.

  • I have to AW my baby in the Moby. It was my first time tying it on. I need more practice. But he loved it and it felt very secure. He was sitting too high right under my chin so I'm sure I tied it wrong somehow. image

LO likes the Moby but I'm afraid of her getting too hot in it. She's also a big baby (10+ pounds at 6 weeks), and it's hard to slide her in the front pockets for the newborn hug hold. I haven't tried any other positions because I don't feel like we can do them until she has better head support. Any advice? I also just ordered the Infantino Mei Tai sash wrap, can't wait to try that out!

  • If you tie the Moby looser that should give you a bigger "pocket" for baby. Do you still have the little instruction booklet? It has a diagram for how to check if you are wrapped too tight or too loose.

I also find the Moby really hot. We went on a short walk in beautiful 70 degree weather and were both sweaty! I live in the South, so I think we'll just use the Moby indoors and during the winter.

The MT will be a great option for heat, however it will be difficult to tuck her head if it doesn't have a hood. I have found woven wraps to not be as hot as a Moby. Remember that Babywearing can help strengthen their neck muscles for good head control. Just like it can help with the flat head.

  • @Nickiechan‌ I *think* it comes with a hood, but I'm not sure.

Could you recommend a nice, affordable woven wrap? Also, any other holds I could try with the Moby?

I would recommend a storchenwiege Leos they are great. Or even a Girasol. There is a Facebook swap group to get and idea of what brands there are. https://www.facebook.com/groups/thebabywearingswap/

Did you do the newborn hug hold in the Moby? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcIlGUCG6mE
