TTC after 35

When to see RE? **LO Mentioned**

DH and I were NTNP for 11+ years when we magically got pregnant. We both turn 35 this year and plan to start TTC again around November. I still have to wean LO as I have not seen AF yet. DH also was born with Epispadias (a congenital birth defect of the penis, he underwent many surgeries as a child for function and aesthetic reconstruction) while we were able to get pregnant before this could have contributed to our problems.

Should we wait the 6 months before seeing an RE or considering our difficulties should we see one sooner? Also, I assume none of this is covered by insurance - correct?

Re: When to see RE? **LO Mentioned**

  • I saw an RE before my dd (planned to do IVF) but ended up getting pregnant on our own. Now that we are ready to ttc#2, I went back right away.
I want to get testing done to check my fertility and see if anything is off. I'm 38 though.
Maybe you could just get a work up and see what's what, and then go from there.
My testing is all covered, treatments are not.

    Good luck to you!

  • It depends on your ins. I have an individual health plan, and  no Infertily coverage. I think group health ins plans cover infertility. Good luck to you, hope it happens naturally again. Congrats on your LO.

  • Given the potential complications, I do not think it would be a bad idea to at least consult with an RE and have some preliminary testing done. It would be better to address any concerns now rather than later. Especially if your insurance can cover the initial consult and preliminary testing.

  • I agree with pps. I was 37 when I got pregnant with DD (I'm 39 now). Both times, I got my BFP on the day of my appointment with the RE (we had a loss 3 months before DD "stuck"). The first time, we waited 6 months.

We're not going to go to the RE this time unless we go another 6 months without being successful, but given your DH's pre-existing condition, I would go right away.

As for insurance, that depends on your individual plan. My old plan (I switched jobs once DD was born) only covered infertility testing, but not treatment. Not sure what is covered under my new insurance. So you would need to check with them first.

Thank you everyone! Should I wait for AF to return before making appt?
