Racial Slur at work

My job is not the regular run o' the mill elementary school but today took the cake.  I usually wear my hair in an afro.  I've been wearing it like this for years.  Well, today I am wearing it in little curls.  It's a little different than my normal 'fro, but not really.  Well, I walk into the lounge and another co-worker (a White lady in her 20's) comments on my hair.  She said that it's "small" today.  I guess in comparison to my normal 'fro, it is.  Well, another co-worker (a White lady in her 60's) says, "Yeah, you've got little N-word naps".  Except she did NOT say "N-word" she said the actual word.  I was dumbfounded.  I informed her that my hair is pretty and that was offensive. 

What in the actual hell is wrong with her?  Why would anyone think that was okay?  She didn't even attempt to explain or apologize.  I kinda want to call HR.  Da FUCK?!?!?!

No.  She did NOT say that.  I am so so so sorry . What a horrible thing to say, especially in the workplace . What is WRONG with people?!

I would definitely call HR.  She needs to be told that is not appropriate language ANYWHERE, but especially not in the workplace -- the school (children, employees, parents), should not be potentially subjected to that sort of hateful, ignorant language.  

Horrible . Who the fuck says shit like that in this day and age?!  That's like when Paula Deen was all "It was 30 years ago" blah blah blah . Uh, 30 years ago was THE EIGHTIES, PAULA.  Not 1942.

Whoa. She is old enough to know that is highly inappropriate.  I'm glad you stood up for yourself. I bet it looked beautiful and don't let her ignorance affect your day. I would report her because she may say something like this to a student or you again.

Um, I need the address of your school like for real. You NEED to call HR because if she thinks that's ok then there is something wrong with her. What if a student heard her ignorant ass? I'm sorry you've had to experience this. No matter how beyond racism people claim we are, it still hurts my heart deeply to hear this type of stuff.

I gasped when I read this and then read it out loud to my husband who is also shocked. That is literally the definition of inappropriate and offensive. HR for sure!

I kinda think the other lady was a little dumbfounded as well. She just looked down. I haven't called HR yet, but that's only because I spent the time after work going to apply at another district and they were closed when I finished. I'm totally doing it on the way to work tomorrow. I'm really just dumbfounded and the fact that I got offended is what bothers me the most because I'm not easily offended.

That's not "easily' offended though. That's a statement that is practically illegal to make -- or should be. Don't feel weird that you were offended.  I'm offended FOR you.

Update!!! So I decided that I would take the issue to my principal to try to handle it in house before I go to HR. Well I was informed that "she's just like that. It's because of years of being a friend with Mrs. ____ (another Black teacher). She was probably just joking. I've heard complaints like this about her before and she thought it was funny. You should go and talk to her about it and let her know how it made you feel." For FUCKING real. That shit happened. I'll let y'all know how the HR call goes. I don't even believe that foolishness was just swept under the rug like that. I'm mad now too because my principals usually look out for me. I guess not anymore.

@sherina825‌ - um yeah. Now your principal and the crazy old lady both need to be reported to HR. I don't care if she did think it was funny. That word is NEVER socially acceptable to use, particularly in a work place. Period. End of story. No excuses.

It doesn't matter if SHE thought it was funny. YOU are the one who matters here. And it's so offensive when people excuse racist/homophobic/sexist/whatever remarks with "oh, he/she's just like that." Um, no. He/she's just a racist/homophobe/sexist/whatever.

This exactly.  You already know that though.  This is part of the reason that conversations and comments like this continue to happen in America - because people make excuses ("she's old" "it was 30 years ago", "oh, her black friend thought it was funny so she thought you would too").  Not okay.
