Ugh... What to Eat?

I love food.  I love to eat.  Its probably my favorite hobby.  I always have a tasting for something or will always be pleased with a cheeseburger or pizza.  Pregnancy is throwing me for a loop here.  Sometimes I have complete loss of appetite, other times, I'm dying of hunger but just have trouble finding something that will please my taste buds.  Right now I need to find something for lunch, but the thought things I have in my house (like pasta) is making me gag.  Do you have a go-to food when you are hungry or are experiencing loss of appetite?

Re: Ugh... What to Eat?

  • I'm having the same issue - I barely have any appetite. I eat a lot of crackers, plain bagels, and other bland things. Yesterday the only thing that sounded good was Mac n cheese out of the blue box.

  • I've basically been living off of bagels. So many things I used to love just make me nauseous nowadays, it's awful.
  • I have been eating a lot of apples. I have no Idea why they taste so good.

At the beginning of my pregnancy, the only meat I wanted was chicken...now I can't get enough red meat. At first, I just ate whatever I could and didn't worry too much about it. I haven't had any food aversions for a while so have been trying to eat healthier now.

  • I keep a big bowl of cut up strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries (mixed together with a little sugar) in the fridge at all times. I've eaten at least one bowl a day and have yet to get tired of it!

Fruit is my go to.  Either those little Cuties or pineapple.

Gah! I love pineapple. I sat down to a bowl of fresh chunks yesterday and it smelled sooooo good. I had two bites then I promptly took a stroll to the bathroom to remove the contents of my stomach. Haven't been able to smell it since. I'm so sad!

Onion bagels with cream cheese are a reliable thing for me, but not the prepackaged kind. They've got to be the fresh sort from a deli or something, otherwise the texture gets to me big time. The only other thing I usually have a taste for is watermelon, it always tastes so refreshing.

  • My "trick" in 1st tri was just to eat whatever sounded good. Regardless of the time of day or whether the ingredients went together. I found that it had a better chance of staying down if it was something my body thought sounded like a good idea. Doritos & ketchup for dinner? Sure. Roast potatoes at 9:30am, why not?

  • I second the fruit bowl thing-life saver. I also second the "eat whatever" (i try to keep it healthy-ish) and have let go of expecting myself to eat things i used to love (salsa, for example is a staple but makes me so sick now!) This morning i went nuts cause i NEEDED a blueberry muffin...i generally hate blue berries but all of a sudden they are delicious.
  • It's definitely moment to moment for me. Kind of a bummer as I work a ways from home and because I never have a clue what I will want come lunchtime I am spending money daily to please my appetite...but it seems pretty worth it to find something I can tolerate! :)

Right now, I think something that is a pretty safe go to for me is potatoes(in any form) Baked, mashed, wedges, fries. They are bland enough and offer some good solid relief! I am learning to find basic things I can easily keep with me in the car or at my desk as the crazy cravings come from nowhere and take control! :) I am learning more and more how to keep yucky feelings away!

  • I've been lucky in that I'm working from home so I have the entire contents of my fridge and pantry available. :) For me, it's been apples (I swear I've eaten more of them in the last week than in the year leading up to then), whole wheat toast (with American cheese if I'm feeling really crazy), grape-nuts cereal, and occasionally yogurt. Super simple stuff.

Hoping I get back to my normal appetites soon! I miss bitter greens, but just looking at them right now gives me the dry heaves.

  • Right there with you. It depends on the day, but lately I've been having luck with frozen waffles (w/ a little butter on them), watermelon, English muffins, pretzels, mashed potatoes, and trail mix. Very random - but these seem to work for me! :)

It's twin girls!! Born on 11-2-14!

  • Eat what you can manage- its different for everyone. I went through a period where I was eating over a pound of clementines a day- and when it wasn't clementines it was Mac and cheese. DH called it the orange food period. Then I had a few days where I wanted steak. But I wanted heavily salted steak. That was weird. Right now I'm on an ice cream/shake/smoothie kick. You learn to roll with it as the pregnancy goes on.

  • I definitely think you should eat what tastes good, but I highly recommend lots of protein even if it doesn't sound good. This is my second pregnancy and I'm definitely feeling better than my first pregnancy, and I feel a lot of that has to do with eating more protein even if I don't feel up for it. I eat spoonfuls of sunflower seeds to give me a little boost.
  • When nothing sounds good to me, I 'drink' my calories.  By that I mean, V8 Juice, Naked Juices, even Chocolate Almond Milk if I want something sweet.  Soup/broth has also been really tasty and makes my stomach feel better.  Good Luck!

  • I've been so queasy everyday & I'm only 6 weeks. Recently I've discovered that if I have a cup of mint tea the queasiness subsides & I can eat *almost* anything! Up until this point i've been living off of bagels with butter, cheese sticks and crackers.

  • Apples were always my go to with my first pregnancy. I'm too early right now to having any altering wants for food.
