Back pain worse when sleeping on side??

I know your supposed to sleep on your side while pregnant. Left side preferred. But I'm finding that doing so creates the worst back pain for me. Even with a pillow between my legs. Or body pillow. In the night I usually end up waking up on my back. Somehow, I get a little bit of back relief from doing so. And by little bit, I mean the pain is definitely still there, just a little less than on the side. I am at my wits end!!! Anyone have any crazy sleep ideas or techniques that have helped them??

Re: Back pain worse when sleeping on side??

  • Yes, my back pain is much worse sleeping on my side, which is why I find myself sleeping on my back in the middle of the night. What I do is sleep at an angle. Start on your side, put a pillow right up against your back and turn just a little to the front. You're sleeping more diagonally then and the pillow stops you from going all the way to your back.

  • I had been sleeping on my side with various pregnancy pillows up until this week but the hip and back pain was too much and I spent most of the night awake. I built a nest of pillows that allows me to sleep on my back but on an incline, like in a recliner and I put pillows under my knees too. It's extremely comfortable, allows me to sleep the whole night (minus 2 potty breaks) and I wake up rested and pain free. My OB says is perfectly o.k. to sleep like this, especially since I am not flat on my back. :) Maybe give it a try! :)

  • Sleeping in a recliner does give some relief to the back/hip pain:( I never knew sleep could be so painful...

I try side sleeping every night but always end up on my back as well. I got a wedge pillow from the walmart baby section and tuck it under the right side of my bum. This seems to help elevate 75% of the back pain.

  • I started going to a prenatal Chiro last week and my back pain is gone. Best decision I've ever made.
  • I find if I sleep on my back my blood pressure feels like it is high (throbbing/pulsing in my face and neck). If I'm having bad days I sleep on the couch. I'm still on my side but the couch supports my back. Also my couch is super comfy.

  • I split the difference and sleep with a pillow behind me so I am sort of on my back and sort of on my side. Sleeping on the couch has helped a lot, too.

I'm not new. I just hate The Bump.

  • Chiro, memory foam mattress topper, body pillow in front between legs and behind. And unisom. Unisom helps too.

  • I have the snoogle. I can have it in front or back, which is nice depending on what I feel like I need -- can support my belly more or my back. I'd recommend it because if you sleep with it on your back side, you won't end up on your back.
