2 month shots...

We are coming up on his shot appt. what should I expect later that day or night? Are they inconsolable or will he just take it like a champ like his circumcision? I know all babies are different but just wondering how it went for your LOs first shots...

Re: 2 month shots...

  • My dd cried during the shots and for awhile afterwards and then took a long nap. The rest of the day she was fine

  • When DD had hers done she fussed and then had a fever later on. DS goes in for his 2 month shots on Monday. I'm hoping he does ok. DD is getting her 18 month ones done at the same time. It might be a long day.

Anyone giving Tylenol before the shots?

  • DD cried during the shots, but was asleep by the time I was on the freeway (5 minutes later).  I did not give Tylenol at all.  She was her normal self by that evening.  I kept moving her leg around so she wouldn't get too sore.  Lots of my friends' babies slept lots the 24 hours after the shots, so I was looking forward to a nice night of sleep for myself!  However, that wasn't the case for us.
  • @cnctf we did, right before they gave her the shots.

OP, DD cried as soon as it happened, but once it was over and she was in my arms, she stopped. My DD is really chill usually so I noticed she was fussier than normal after her shot. She'll cry instantly if we tried carrying her or putting her down because we touched her legs. Where they gave her shot was swollen for a day so you can put a chill pack wrapped in a towel on it. Just give him Tylenol when you notice any signs of pain.

  • Thanks! I was hoping that it wouldn't be too bad. I don't even want to go- I'll be in tears for him. I hate hearing him cry even for just a little while. He already has two little teeth threatening to pop out way too early so it's been a fussy week anyways.

DD did well with hers. She gave a real sad little cry at the office (that made me want to cry lol) she was a bit fussier for the rest of that day and her sleep was all over the place for 2 nights. We ended up having to give her Tylenol after because she got a fever. The fever was gone by the next morning though. I don't think it was as bad as I was expected.

  • DS screamed bloody murder during the shots and was fussy the rest of that evening. The worst was the next day, he was whimpering pretty much from morning until 6 or 7pm and nothing was making him feel better (including Tylenol).

  • You'll both be okay :) DD screamed during the shots but settled down after a few minutes and fell asleep in the car. She was a little fussy later that night but one recommended dose if Tylenol did the trick. I was told not to pre medicate for the reasons @esd‌ mentioned.

DD was asleep when they gave her the shots.  She woke up when she got them, screamed for 10-20 seconds then went right back to sleep.  We had brought the Tylenol with us and the pedi told us how much to give her if she needed it.  I asked if we should just give it to her before the shots and he said not to, that we should wait and see if she needed it.

I had to go to work after the appointment, but DH and my mom were with her all day.  She barely ate and everytime she woke up, she cried and cried.  They did end up giving her one dose of Tylenol.  DD also wanted to be held, but we did manage to get her down in her crib for the night.  She was MUCH better the next day.  She still slept a lot, but she was no longer fussy and didn't need to be held all day.

  • I was told only use Tylenol if she developed at fever, not for fussiness or precautionary. Grace was cranky and didn't want to sleep. I was surprised at the blood from one of them too and she did have a bump the next day on that side.
  • DD has hers tomorrow so I'm hoping she will be a trooper through them!
  • The only real difference I saw in Roosevelt was that he wanted to nurse more frequently for the next 36ish hours. I fed him right before the shots and consoled him right after- he only cried for 30 seconds. He got sick 6 days after his shots. Hope your LO does well!
  • We just had ours Friday and he was sleepier that afternoon and evening, but completely fine the next day. Iirc, my older son was the same.

  • Thanks! @Gilmore09‌ I'm definitely going to get all his shots done, I was just wondering what the normal behavior afterwards was like. I got whooping cough from another teacher (while I was pregnant actually) that I work with and I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
  • She had her shots Friday at 10am. Ofcourse she screamed and cried during but then was alright with her paci. Slept at home for an hour then woke up screaming bloody murder and was inconsolable. She is usually very chill and easygoing.

It took me about 30 mins to calm her down and she slept very lightly (would wake up if I stopped rocking her) in my arms for a couple hours. Was very fussy and sleepy the rest of the day. Developed a fever overnight and I have her Tylenol for it. She slept horribly.

The 2nd day she was just a bit more fussy and clingy than normal, and slept a lot.

Today is the 3rd day and she is actin pretty well back to normal and I am hoping that she sleeps well tonight.

  • True! I feel like being a teacher I am a germ carrier so I definitely want him to get them all- I just do not want to watch or hear him cry. Poor guy.
  • DD cried during the shots and then took a long nap when we got home. When she woke up, she started crying inconsolably for about 45 minutes. No fever but she was obviously uncomfortable so she got a dose of Tylenol and fell back asleep. After that, she was better but still cranky for about a day.
  • DD screamed during hers, it was so sad! Then she slept for about 2 hours and we thought we were in the clear. .. then she woke up. She started screaming again all night. We have her Tylenol twice and DH andI slslept in shifts to console her. Halfway through the next day she was fine. I'm scared for the 4 month shots now.
  • That was horrible. :( He screamed like crazy for about 30 mins then chilled out. He had a sad little dazed look in the car and was asleep before we got home. He has been sleepy and we gave him some Tylenol after he started freaking out again tonight. He hasn't been very hungry though. Poor baby. I don't want to do that again in just two months.
  • I am sorry it went so badly :(

If you are EBF, make sure and pump during his normal eating times, so your milk supply doesn't go down.  I think I read that on a different post on here and I found it very helpful.
  • We just went through the 2-month shots yesterday.  I was preparing for the worst and it went so much better than I had expected.

She screamed and cried while she was getting the shots but calmed down quickly as I nursed her immediately after.  Then she slept about 1/2 hour on the way home and then was up for a couple hours; a little fussy, but no more than her normal evening fussy moments.  I put her down at 7:00 pm and she slept until 5:00 am.  That has been our longest stretch ever; the previous record was 7 1/2.  She has also been very sleepy today.  All in all, not too bad.  I didn't even need to give any medicine.
