Cloth Diapering

Cloth Diaper Cover Question

Hello! I just have a quick question for you ladies. I am currently 12 weeks pregnant with my first little one. Me and my husband are going to be using a cloth diaper service in our area so I have started doing some research. What I have found is that there are so many different brands of cloth covers and then each brand has about 3-4 different options! Yikes
What has been your experiences with certain brands? Do some preform better than others?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. TIA :)

Re: Cloth Diaper Cover Question

  • Why use a service? They are expensive and tend to use harsh chemicals to clean the diapers.

  • Diapers are easy to wash!  Especially if you use prefolds/covers (which you have to use for a diaper service, I think?)

    cold rinse
    Hot wash
    cold rinse

    done.

I like Thirsties, blueberry, best bottoms, sweet pea and bummis covers.

  • By choices, do you mean snap or hook and loop closure? I have a mixture of both. The hook and loop is easier to use and can be adjusted better, but snaps seem hardier.

My favorite is the Blueberry coverall, but this doesn't work for newborns. I liked Rumparooz newborn covers, too.

  • My favorite NB covers are Sweet Pea and Bummis Super Brites in aplix(Velcro) Thirsties Duo wraps in size one are good too, but they at not fit a tiny NB because they are meant to fit up to 16 ish pounds. I hear Blueberry mini coveralls are nice too.

After NB size I love Blueberry Coveralls, Sweet Pea, and Best Bottoms. I only get snaps in the bigger sizes because my 18 month old knows how to unstick the velcro.

I agree with ITK though. You should think about washing yourself. It's really NBD once you get a routine down.

  • Look into what they use to clean the diapers with. I am not a fan of chemicals, which is the main reason I decided to CD in the first place. Washing at home is easy once you figure out the system that works for you.

As for covers, I love Thirsties Duos and Blueberry. Bummis make nice covers as well, and their newborns fit little ones well.

  • I liked my bummis super brite and rumparooz newborn covers. I really don't care for either of the thirsties covers that I have. For when they are a bit bigger, I freaking LOVE my flip covers. They are so stretchy, I feel like it is easy to get a good fit every time. I also like best bottoms and rumparooz one-size.

  • We have a handful of Bummis covers, a couple homemade ones and an imagine cover. I really like the imagine cover.

I prefer snaps but mainly because I forget to use the laundry tabs with aplix.

  • I used a service for the first 3-4 months of my daughters life. It's gross. You only get 1 type of diaper (prefolds). You then have to not only provide your own covers, but wash them yourself. Then if you needed more protection for overnight or if your child was sensitive to wetness you'd have to provide and wash your own doublers and fleece liners. In all I ended up with 1 giant bucket filled with a WEEKS worth of nasty smelly prefolds stinking up the room and a separate wetbag filled with covers, doublers, and liners I'd have to wash myself. To make matters worse her daycare would not accept prefolds, so I had to get 10-12 pockets for daycare (that I had to wash myself) and the diaper service costed about as much as getting sposies would have. I didn't save any money, I actually spent more money. After a few months I said screw it, cancelled the service and bought more pockets and few dozen prefolds.

Washing them yourself isn't hard and really will be more sanitary. Poop will be getting into your washing machine regardless having kids. I'd watch the YouTube series Cloth 101 for more information.

  • Apparently you Bishes weren't fast enough for her quick question.

I always feel very wohwohwoh when I ask someone a question and they just never come back. So annoying. THIS is why people stop using cloth diapers is because of posters like this.

  • Oh I'm sorry  I haven't been glued to my computer all day...I just had to work all day and then spent time with my family....really.

Thanks to all those who responded with very helpful advice, looks like I have a lot more planning/research in my future!
