Newborn Cold

My sweet Reed is 3 weeks old and my husband is currently under the weather with a cold. (sneezing, runny nose, achy, fever) I just started feeling on the edge tonight. (Sore lymph nodes, runny nose) any advise how to keep precious Reed from getting it?! I'm super paranoid that it's still RSV season and I know it presents as a cold in adults but can be deathly serious in infants! Husband is staying in a separate room on far end of house and washing hands constantly/not holding Reed if possible. I'm breast feeding still hoping to pass some immunity. Any advise or previous experience that will ease my nerves about baby possibly getting sick so early?

Re: Newborn Cold

  • There have been a lot of times that everyone in the family has been sick and the only one to not get it was my breastfeeding baby. Just keep doing what you're doing and take him in right away if you notice he starts to feel sick.

  • If you are breastfeeding, keep it up (even if you feel too sick) and do it often. You'll pass antibodies on to the baby to can prevent them from getting sick or at least less sick and for a shorter period than you.
Wash you hands and try to too much contact with babies hands.

  • Okay will do! Praying hard he doesn't get sick.
  • My toddler currently has a cold and fever and I'm feeling the onset of a cold.  Like PP said just keep nursing!  LO will get your antibodies and may not get sick.  There were many times I had a cold and my toddler never got sick, I swear it was becuase we were breastfeeding.  Good luck!

Early signs of RSV are fever, runny nose and sniffles. Then high fever, cough and wheezing. If LO starts developing the early signs, go see your pedi. As PPs said, keep BFing and do lots of hand washing!

  • I second @Jenstwins‌ about seeing a doctor at any early signs. One of our twins developed an occasional rough cough and then suddenly had difficulty breathing after the cough. We took him to the ER and he tested positive for RSV. He didn't have a lot of the symptoms but it was enough to be hospitalized for a few days. We were lucky to have caught it early. He was 3 weeks old.
