July 2013 Moms

school vent

All week I've had 6-8 kids absent. 4 had confirmed flu. The others had flu like symptoms. Their stupid parents keep sending them to school sick and we keep having to send them back home! Today I had a little boy who was out with the flu last Friday, in Monday and Tuesday, out Wednesday and Thursday, walk into my room and immediately vomit twice. Two of my flu kids are back today saying they took fever medicine this morning. One was back yesterday after being out Monday through Wednesday. He was too sick for his mom to come to parent teacher conferences Wednesday night and his mom posted on Facebook that he still had a fever on Wednesday! When the school nurse called to send him home his mom told her he hasn't had a fever since Tuesday afternoon! What is wrong with people? ! Is it just my district or are people this bad everywhere? ! I'm so angry that these people can't be bothered to take care of their sick kids. I know people have to work, but when your kid has the flu it's not ok to let them infect 20 other five year olds! Period! Ever!

Rant over. Sorry.

Re: school vent

  • We would have the same issues at daycare.  Only the little ones cant say that mommy gave me medicine this morning.  We usually got to find out after it wore off.  Or breakfast returned.

  • Ugh, that's frustrating. I imagine these parents are having a hard time staying home or finding child care for sick kids? That sucks that it becomes your problem though, your job is hard enough.

  • I'm a SLP and when I worked for a clinic, I can't tell you how many times I would finish a session, come out and tell the parent that child wasn't themselves today to be told, "oh yeah, he/she was home sick today with a fever.". Or the kid would tell me mid-session that they had been home Vomitting and home with a fever for the last few days and hadn't gone to school and took fever meds before therapy. X( You bring your kid sick, then don't complain when I'm out sick, grrrrrr. It made me really mad because not only was I exposed, but I would try to do extra disinfecting b/w patients because some of our kids had health risks.

Sorry you have had a crazy week!

  • DH used to be an elementary teacher and he often had the same problems.  I hope you can avoid all the germs!

  • Unfortunately it's like that everywhere. I teach preschool at a center and people bring their sick kids all the time but lie about it. We can always tell and around noon when the ibuprofen wears off the kids all have fevers again. Sorry it sucks, I can so relate!

  • Well I made it through the day and I'm a little less irritated now that I'm home. I feel like many parents see me as free babysitting. The kids were so out of it today I put a movie on for the afternoon, so maybe I am! Lol

  • Ugh. Dd and I are both sick AGAIN! We just got over this! I don't think it's the flu... seems to just be a head cold. It's so infuriating that because my students get sent to school far too sick to be there dd has to suffer. I'm sucking snot like it's my job today. To parents of the world: if your kid is too sick for school KEEP THEM HOME! It's not just for their own good, but for all of the healthy people as well!

  • Nope, not just you. I work in a high poverty area where a lot of parents have no job and they STILL drop their sick kid off. I even came to back to school night during my maternity leave and pleaded with parents to keep sick children home since I had a new baby to take care of. This class is the best it's ever been with that. Classes in the past have been really bad with parent involvement and showing genuine concern for their child. It's very saddening.
