Mom fail: I gave my 16m old DD beer

edited March 2014 in May 2014 Moms
Tonight I was snuggling with DD before bed time. She started pointing at the glass on my nightstand and freaked out. Tried to give her her sippy cup, she wouldn't take it. Tried to have her drink from the glass but there wasnt enough "water" left in it, so I poured a couple oz from her sippy in it and she chug it down. Then I take a sip and realize that wasn't my water glass on my nightstand but DH's beer! Yup I totally gave my baby diluted beer to drink and she loved it. Mom fail! What is your latest mom fail?

Growing up, my aunt was a raging alcoholic and would hide her wine in juice containers in the fridge. I can still remember babysitting my cousins and pouring them a glass of apple juice only to have them spit it out and declare that it was "ucky". So I grabbed one of the glasses and take a drink and sure enough, it was some kind of awful wine.

  • Its not a mom fail for me, but for my own mother, because the beer made me think of this. For my brother and I to get Pepsi it was always a special thing. But we always had to split the can. So there's a can sitting next to the fireplace, and I pick it up, there was still some left. My mom is watching me and she said go ahead. So I'm thinking, score, I get Pepsi, don't have to share, sweet. It was my moms flipping ash tray. And she knew it, and let me drink from it. A mouth full of cigarette ashes and Pepsi is not very tasty, FYI. Not sure this classifies as a mommy fail, cause my mom knew full well what was happening.

  • My SIL had a similar situation with DS1. We got married in San Francisco, so SIL and her fiancé threw in a road trip while they were over for the wedding and ended up having a couple of nights in Vegas. DS1 was about 15 months old and they woke up one morning to find him acting a bit woozy and giggly. Turns out SIL had left a half drunk vodka and lemonade on the table the night before and forgotten about it. DS1 woke up early, found it and downed it. He was absolutely fine and just slept it off (it wasn't much apparently), so now we just act like he went on a bender and joke "what happens in vegas!"

  • Not a mom fail but an Aunt fail. Last year I left my Margarita in a water bottle when my family was at our lake house and my nephew got a hold of it and took a big swig. My brother was very pissed at me that I left it at the guest house where the kids were staying. I was not the only one drinking margaritas that night but of corse he had to grab mine.
  • When I was about a year and a half I was at the local fair with my mom, aunt and uncle. My mom asked them to keep an eye on me for a bit. We were at the "old fiddlers contest" and my aunt and uncle started dancing. In the meantime I started walking around to all of the tables and was drinking beer out of cans left on the picnic tables. My moms comes back after being gone for about a half hour and finds me with a beer in my hand wreaking of it and a bit tipsy. Needless to say, aunt and uncle didn't have baby watching duty for quite a while after that!

Holy shit, I'm sorry that happened to you. WTF is wrong with your mother???

Haha, I've been asking myself that for the past 31 years. My mom is definitely not your 'typical' mother, by any stretch of the imagination.

  • I've let my two-year-old chow down on his own bowl of strawberries Romanoff the past few times we've gone to La Madeleine for lunch, not noticing the "Contains Alcohol" asterisk on the menu until about the fourth time. I doubt an entire bowl contains more than a teaspoon of brandy, but still... Derp.

How do you mistake beer for water? :-/

Q Unless of course it was PBR.
LOL, I think it was some kind of pale ale. But you know, the room was dark, there wasn't much beer left in the glass in the first place andplusalso it was on my nightstand. I always have a water glass on my nightstand so it didn't even cross my mind that it wasn't water.

  • Recent mom fail: ran upstairs to pee bc the toilet in our powder room was acting up. Came right back down and DD was OUTSIDE in our front courtyard with the dog. He had a ball in his mouth and was ready to play. Apparently DH forgot to lock the door when leaving for work. Mother of the year award!

The Pepsi can of cigarette ashes... I'm sorry, that's just wrong and disgusting. :(
  • At first I thought the subject said you gave your 16 year old DD beer.  I thought, well, that's not really anything to feel bad about.  I guess 16 month old is a little different, but she'll be fine.  ;)

As for the Pepsi can of ashes - THAT is the worst mom fail by far on this thread.  Ugh.  That's just messed up.

This reminds me of a conversation my H and the men in our circle of friends had while the ladies were pregnant last time. Each had to decide what he would lactate if he could lactate any one thing. I believe some of the finalists were katsup, whiskey, peanut butter and beer.

Also, I can't get over the Pepsi can ash tray. What possible reason could there have been for that in her mind?

Not a clue...she's had other mom fails that probably would even surpass this one, believe it or not. She's not very 'motherly' or....human....anything really. But she did teach me how NOT to parent, so there's that?!

  • When my little sister was three and I was 12 I remember rounding the corner into the living room just in time to see her taking a big swig out of a glass of beer my dad had left on the end table. She taught herself a lesson there when she realized it wasn't "appa juice"!
