Popcorn

Okay, the BLW post from the other day made me wonder...when do you let your kid have popcorn? I have read different things about it, and I can't decide what to do. So far I've let him have a few small pieces that don't have giant bits of kernel husk in them, but I am not even sure that's really safe. I should probably stop eating popcorn altogether b/c it's GMO or something, but it's one of my favorite snacks. WDYD?

Re: Popcorn

  • DS1 had it around 20 months and we just made sure he wasn't left alone while eating it.  We never had an issue and he loves popcorn.  By that age he had all his molars and was a super chewer so I wasn't too worried.

  • We haven't given E popcorn yet, but I think the DC did once.  She's in the 2 year old class though.  So maybe 2 is the rule?

Popcorn is gross though, so it's not an issue at my house.

  • @jepes1348 I wish.

Damn you Jane, why are you reading and posting this type of sad stuff while I'm at work?!?!  Part of me immediately says 'my kid is never eating popcorn!'  And then part of me is like, really, 4-5?  That's not a realistic age to tell people to avoid foods for a kid.  It just won't happen.

You are correct.  But only if it has real butter on it.
  • FWIW, I've specifically heard that popcorn is a choking hazard so I've avoided it.
  • I've heard around 4years old. Even my dogs choke in popcorn. I could eat a bucketful in one sitting...it's really sad to fend M off that whole time

My 25 month old has had a bite here or there. Never much and never alone. I was worried about it getting stuck between his teeth. Never occurred to me about the choking... BAH!
  • Popcorn is a choking hazard due to how light it is - the Heimlich can be ineffective in dislodging it.

We eat popcorn after DD goes to bed.

  • We didn't let D have it until 4 or so. One of my biggest fears is someone choking in front of me though. So I'm probably overly cautious.

  • Okay, at least I don't feel like such a dork for being scared about it. I'll definitely save my popcorn-eating for times when DS is not around.

  • I think Rosie has had a bit here or there. We don't offer it often though. She's more a chip fiend anyways and I only like super buttery movie theater popcorn.

  • I haven't really given DD popcorn yet.  I've cracked pieces into very small pieces to give her.  But she eats everything like a champ... so maybe she's ready...

  • I would probably say 3. Shit, I still gag on popcorn at times.  Smart Pop is awesome. I don't buy microwave popcorn  anymore after reading about all the crap they put in it.
