Swelling

Hey y'all --

Has anyone been dealing with swelling in their hands?  I feel like it's an odd symptom to have at 16 weeks but some days I have to take my wedding rings off because my fingers are so swollen and other days I am just fine (like today).

Re: Swelling

  • I have this just a little bit. My rings seem either looser or tighter depending. I feel like for me at this point though it is triggered by going from cold surrounds to warmer surrounds. If it seems excessive to you ask your OB about it. I know that swelling is something they ask me about every single time I go there.

  • My feet have already started swelling so have my fingers. It's not every day though. I'm just trying my darndest to drink more water. I swelled up like a BALLOOON last time and I am doing everything I can to avoid that again.....

  • I occasionally have swelling in my feet and my rings bother me some times. I asked my doc about it on Tuesday, and she said it was normal. She recommended that I drink lots of water and elevate my feet when possible. I was definitely not expecting it this soon.
  • I have been having this since BFP. It's not constant, but some days are worse than others. I always swell up more in the summer anyway, so I'm pretty sure I am not even going to be able to wear my engagement ring this summer. My wedding band is pretty dainty so I might be able to wriggle it on, but definitely not my rock.

  • With my last pregnancy, I had to take my rings off right around 16 weeks (but was during the summer).  This time I am being much better about salt and water intake and that seems to really help, and I am sure the colder temperatures are playing a role in this.  I am not looking forward to the summer and how my body reacts.  I have noticed swelling in my hands and feet, but not as bad as last time yet, but my pregnancy induced carpel tunnel is back so I have started wearing my wrist guards at night.  It has really helped with the tingling and the falling asleep feeling I constantly get

  • This actually happens to me every year when the weather starts to change. Nothing too drastic, but I have to take my rings off when I get home at the end of the day.

  • It seems counterintuitive (to me) but drinking more water is supposed to help. I haven't had any issues yet, but I did with previous pregnancies.

PSA - it is always a good idea to check your rings once in a while. A friend recently had to have her weddings rings cut off after her hand had been swelling. Just in time too, since once they were off she realized she had been losing sensation in her finger!

  • I had cankles last night, but they're back to normal this morning. I had some salty Vietnamese pho for dinner last night. Water definitely helps. If your body thinks it's dehydrated (or has too much sodium in the blood), it thinks it needs to hold on to water.
