Multiples

hip ultrasound for twins

My twin boys are 11 weeks old. One was breech and the other transverse. Their pedi said hip ultrasounds are ordered for multiples, especially breech babies. They had their first ultrasound at 6 weeks. One passed and one had to go back yesterday for a follow up ultrasound. We are now being referred to an orthopedic specialist. Does anyone have experience with this?

Re: hip ultrasound for twins

  • I had to do hip ultrasounds with mine because they were both breech, but we were cleared the first time around with no follow up. I hope someone has some answers for you!

  • Interesting. I hadn't heard this and my babies are breech right now. I'll have to make sure to ask the pediatrician when they come see us at the hospital.

  • both my boys were breech- they never had a hip u/s.  Instead the pedi would do an exam that if the folds of their legs lined up - which was a screening for hip dysplasia.  It is more common in girls.
  • Both of my girls had hip ultrasounds as they were breech babies - but we were never sent anywhere after those came back clear. Our pedi was able to tug at their legs and mess a bit with their hips to generally confirm, as well -- but we were extra cautious with DD2 given her 'extremely' low tone.

I have a daughter that had hip dysplasia. Hers wasn't caught until 6 months, but we had an ultrasound, then an x-ray, and then physical therapy. I was terrified at first, and felt super guilty that it took so long to detect it since I noticed she was falling behind on some gross motor skills but kept listening to all the moms who told me she would just do it in her own time. *facepalm* Therapy turned out to be amazing for us. If it isn't obvious that there is a problem, like visual frogging of the legs for example, then chances are IF you do get a hip dysplasia diagnosis it will most likely be mild to moderate and correctable with a brace and/or therapy. By the time we caught it in my daughter she was too big for a brace to be effective, but therapy helped immensely and she was not only caught up, but ahead after only 3 months. She went from not rolling, crawling, or transitioning on her own AT ALL at 8 months to doing all of that plus pulling up and walking by 11 months.

It is routine most places to do hip ultrasounds for breech babies, especially girls. They are at higher risk of dysplasia. I don't know if it is for multiples since this is my first multiple pregnancy (I have had two breech girls though =P) but it makes sense that they would screen.

  • My di/di girls were breech and we also had the ultrasound. Everything was fine.

Was it the breech one that has to go back? Do you know what type of breech he/she was? My girls were both footling breech. Maybe yours was frank breech (where their feet are by their head)?

  • One of my girls had "clicky hips" so we did an ultrasound on both at about ten days old and they were both fine. However, I have a friend who's baby had to wear a brace for a short period of time and you would never know it now.

  • My breech girl also had an ultrasound around 6 weeks. She was cleared after that.
