Cloth Diapering

Rookie question about flannel wipes

Sorry to ask a dumb question.  Pretend I'm a newbie.

When you people keep saying you just cut up some flannel you bought at the fabric store and zig-zagged the edges... is there anything specific I need to know about this flannel?  My mom could totally whip me up a batch of these super simple, and give it as a baby gift, and then MH can't argue that he hates cloth wipes and wants to use disposable ones, because these were free.  But I want to make sure I tell my mom the right stuff to buy.  And you just do them single layer right?

Re: Rookie question about flannel wipes

  • Should she wash and dry them a few times before sewing?  Or will it not shrink?

  • Loading the player...
  • Single layer, wash once.

If your mom has a serger that's preferable for the edges. But people who don't make due with just a zig zag stitch. They will fray a little beyond the stitch, just FYI.

  • @mapleme We have some a friend made us that are flannel on one side and terry on the other, but they are sewn the fancy way where you turn them inside out and sew them?  They are way to thick and mh hates them.  We use them as nose wipes now.

@yellowlily2013 She doesn't have a serger.  I'm okay with some fraying though.  Thanks for the tips!

I thought it was!  But I wasn't sure and didn't want to be wrong.  I actually learned that from ITK whose words often get autocorrected to T&T.  Haha.

  • I turned and topstiched mine, but both sides are flannel. I bought whatever flannel was in the clearance section as well as a 2nd hand flannel sheet. They're not too thick for me, but the Thirsties ones that I randomly have are velour on one side, and they seem uber thick.
I also "quilted" mine, so I'm not sure if that helped with my thickness issue.
