Baby Names

Ulysses

Went over names with my husband the other day and he saw this and loved it. Thoughts?

Re: Ulysses

  • I like the name...it means 'wrath', I think, but I think the history behind would trump that anyway.

At first I was socked but I think it's growing on me. I really love the history behind it.

  • It is a bit grand but I do like it. I would be surprised to see it but I think it would be a good surprise.

  • I think I could get behind it for a MN, but that's a weighty name for a baby.

  • I like it. I'm not sure I'd be daring enough to use it as a fn though.

  • I kind of like it (though I agree with PP, it is a BIG name).  Ulie for short.
  • It's not my favorite name, but I once had a student named Ulysses, so my association is positive.

For the record, I have no problem with "big" names on little babies.  I say go for it if you both love it enough.

  • It's too big to be practical.  I like it, though.

  • DH and I also love this one. I had a hard time coming up with a possible NN though. Have you come up with anything?

    Big name.

    I adore big names.

Us too. Our first son is named Abram and some have told me it's a big/heavy name.

I love Abram and Abraham, too!

Aw thank you! I guess my next question would be if Abram and Ulysses sound good, or cheesy?

Lee? Or Lyss (which I believe was Grant's nn).

I thought of Lyss and like it better, but I was worried it was too feminine?

  • I think both Lee and Lyss would be cute NNs, and not too feminine, although a Ulysses being called Lee for short strikes me as kind of hilarious due to the Ulysses S. Grant/Robert E. Lee connections. I would never use it myself, but I would be ecstatic to see it on another person's kid.

    One word: Shaquille.

    Wait... What?

    And that was my hesitancy.

    Lyss for sure now!

  • Abram and Ulysses is an awesome sibset.

  • I like it. But, it is a really big name and I think I would like the idea of it more than the actual usage of it.

Lol, I mean that Shaquille sounds for all the world like a (made up) girl's name. And yet:

LOL! That's what my husband was saying this morning when I mentioned Lyss. I think he liked it as a potential nn.

  • Thanks everyone. I think we will have it on our list as a contender. My husband says it's one of his favorite 4.

  • I think James Joyce (ugh), Odysseus (no!) and Ulysses S. Grant. This is just too much to saddle a kid with.

  • I think it would be okay as a middle name, but I would never be able to do is as a first name, personally. I wouldn't side-eye it though. So much better than Aiden, Tristan, Bentley, or so many other popular names.
  • I think it's way too much as a first time. It's not a bad name, just not one I would ever want to give to a baby/person. I envisioned reading it on my FB feed and I just can't get behind it...
