Potty Training

I know we discussed this a while back, just wanted to see where everyone is at. DS has only peed in his potty once and does not want to sit on it. However he does knwo what is goign on because now he goes and hides in a corner to do his business in his diaper and then just comes to tell me he's ready to be changed.

If you have already successfully PT'd, what books or recommendations do you have?

Well, knowing is half the battle! I'm talking to DS more and more about it. We sit him on the potty every time he gets a bath and will go most of the time he's on there. I've tried to get him to have his bowel movement on the potty when I think he might be starting one. I'm going to give it another month and then start putting him on the potty before/after naps and bedtime. In the mean time, I will work on him to wake up with a dry diaper. My DD started around 2 1/2 for potty training.

  • DD2 was sitting on the potty frequently, pooping most only in the potty, insisted we make her diaper into a pull up..... then lost all interest and will only sit on the toilet once or so a day yet doesn't want us to change her diaper..... ugh.  I'm trying not to push but come one and use the potty already!  We have a step stool she can move and a potty ring to go on the toilet.   When it gets nice outside we can go with undies but I can't deal with working during the day then evenings of 3 kids, 3 dogs and cleaning up accidents inside.

FWIW DD1 was pretty good by 2.5yrs and had a slight slip at 2y9mo when DD2 was born then was again good to go shortly thereafter so I know patience is key.

  • Thanks ladies, I know I need to be patient, but it really helps to be reminded :) I am going to try sitting him on the potty before bath time as well. He loves the book Llama Llama Nighty Night. Maybe I will just start stressing that night time routine of potty and bath.

  • We aren't really anywhere with potty training and I'm not pushing it at all.

DD did start school about 6 weeks ago and they take them to the potty there (or offer them the potty) during diaper changes.  So she's getting familiar with it.  And we got a potty seat for the toilet at the house and she *occasionally* will ask to sit on it (usually it seems when she wants to stall from doing something else....like going to bed), but she hasn't "gone" in the potty (at least at home....I'm not sure of school).  She likes to sit on it (that's got to be half the battle, right?) and she likes me to read her the Sesame Street Potty Time book and she likes to try to wipe (I've had to take the TP away or she will just tear off TP and "wipe" the whole time) and she likes to close the lid and flush at the end.

She still will fight having her diaper changed and if I ask her if it's wet or dirty (when I know it is) she will 90% of the time say "No" so I don't know what that means.  I was going to try to be more "active" with potty training around 2 1/2.  I also wanted to wait and see how things go with her and the new baby.and try to avoid any diaper regression so that's why I've been so lax on even really starting.

  • We potty trained successfully at 22 months. We read "Toilet Training in Less Than a Day" by Nathan Azrin. It took us one and a half days for him to really get it and about a week to stop having any accidents. The method they use requires a lot of consistency and repetition on your part. But it was amazing how fast it worked! This mom gave a run down about how it works this site (although I still recommend reading the book)....

I skipped the wetting doll and just used a stuffed animal and hid a nasal aspirator filled with water behind it to make it look like the animal was peeing.
Good luck! Potty training was way easier than the horrible nightmare I thought it was going to be.

I haven't even tried yet, she doesn't seem interested at all.  DD1 was trained at 2.5y, I'm going to try with DD2 in a few months and see how things go.  DD1 trained real easily and was day and night trained within a month.  Fingers crossed DD2 is that easy.

  • We are just going at it slowly. I think she is getting closer to being "ready." She usually goes every morning (but still has a wet diaper most every night unless she doesn't really drink milk before bed) and sometimes after naptime and before bedtime and maybe another time during the day if I just take her -- she doesn't tell me yet, so it is just luck sometimes -- sometimes she is ill when she wakes up so she acts like she doesn't want to go but I still take her and she will still go and then be ok. They work with her at school a bit too and she has shown more interest since some of her friends are potty trained. She has pooped twice on the potty cos I can usually tell when she's about to go but she usually fights about not wanting to go to the potty to do it.
We are doing a sticker book now which gets her excited but still not totally crazy about it yet, so we will see how it goes...

  • DD loves sitting on the potty and pretending to pee/poo, wiping, and flushing (while insisting there is pee/poo that isn't really there) but has only ever gone once at home and it was mostly by accident. They told me she has been going really well at school but recently said they aren't sure if she is actually going there either and I'm not really sure what to do at this point since she insists she went but there isn't anything there. I was taking it slow and not really pushing but now she has started taking her diaper off and going in her pants so we are trying to work harder at it.

  • I'm waiting until DH's summer break to potty train DD.  She could probably be trained now but our downstairs bathroom isn't heated so making it to the upstairs bathroom in time with the 3 monthold in tow seems a bit much right now.

  • DS seemed interested and would use the potty when we asked him. We had a death in the family not too recently, so we've had some regression. I plan on potty training completely when I'm on summer break and before ds2 arrives.

  • We just started potty training. We're on day 2 of the 3 day method.
Day 1 DD only had 1 pee accident and pooped in her diaper during nap time.
Today, day 2, she pooped in her undies but has had no pee accidents yet! And, she pooped again later on the potty.

She seems to be really enjoying it. I think her favorite part might be getting to flush the toilet when she's finished. We also made a sticker chart and she gets excited about putting a new sticker on her chart every time she uses the potty. She's gotten 2 "potty prizes" so far; 1 for pooping on the potty and 1 for peeing 5 times on the potty. I just picked up a bunch of stuff from the Dollar Tree and put it in a basket for her to choose from.

Hopefully sometime this weekend we can attempt to leave the house diaper free. I feel like that will be the big challenge.

  • DS has no interest and doesn't even care if he has a wet diaper. We will be waiting awhile.
