Fat legs and bumpers?

I put my chubbers in his crib while I shower six feet away. Just now I got out to find one of his fat legs trapped in between the bars if the crib. Poor guy looked like a bear with his paw caught in a trap, and couldn't spaz out like he loves to do. So is this what bumpers are for? Dont laugh. I always thought they were just for looks. I took the one I received back due to SIDS risk. But now I'm thinking I may need one.
How many of you guys are using bumpers? Thoughts?

Re: Fat legs and bumpers?

  • No matter where we put her in her crib, Shelby always ends up against the front rail.   A month or so ago in the middle of the night she woke up screaming because her leg was caught between the bars.  We bought the mesh bumper - think like the sides of the pnp.  Haven't had an issue since.

  • Yea I think that's what they are for. And they are pretty.=) I had the pretty, thick kind that matched his bedding but I took it out when he started scooting around/rolling for safety reasons.

I haven't had an issue with him sticking his arms or legs out yet (probably because he is swaddle in a sleep sack still), but if he starts doing that then I will get one of the breathable, mesh kinds as mentioned above. They sell them at Target, BRU, Etc.
  • We haven't made it into the crib yet, however, after my coworker had to saw his crib apart because his daughter got her leg stuck in there I think we will go with breathable bumpers.
  • We have used the padded bumpers with all children and had no issues. I have heard of some people tying them to outside of crib. I think we kept bumpers tucked down low with last baby. Haven't transitioned to crib yet this time.
  • Yes that's what they're for. I use a mesh bumper looks like this:

  • Off to Target to get one! I love those fat legs, and don't want anything to happen to them! Thanks everyone!
  • Hi chunky baby buddy! I'm sorry, but I laughed picturing your guy with one chubby leg caught in the crib. How close together are the bars??

Hey!! The bars are about 2 in apart. Ya, it was kinda funny since he wasn't hurt. Fat baby problems. :-)
