Cloth Diapering

Help with toddler pee

I never thought I'd type those words, haha!

So I posted last week that E was drinking a ton, and had soaked through all her diapers that day.  (She is almost 20 months, and has been in Freetimes pretty consistently since she was 10 lbs.)  Since then, she still seems to be drinking more than she used to, and is frequently (once a day, or EOD) peeing through a Freetime in 2 hours.  We used to always change every 3-4 hours.

So... is she drinking too much and that needs to be what I'm looking at?  (She has at least 16 ounces of milk plus 16 ounces of water daily.  Sometimes more.)  Or is she just getting older and holding it longer and the Freetimes can't keep up with toddler pee?  Or is 2 hours how frequently a toddler needs to be changed?

She has also suddenly started getting frequent rashes, which I have been assuming have been coming from sitting in a wet diaper for too long (her daycare sucks, tomorrow's her last day there!!!)  But last night it started looking yeasty, with the dots and such, so we're using nystatin again.

The diapers are definitely soaked through, so it's not a leaking or repelling issue.  Anything I'm missing?  Thoughts?  Suggestions?  Thanks ladies.

Re: Help with toddler pee

  • We've been similar issues with DD lately. She's almost 22 months and soaks through a lot of her diapers. Nap time and night time are the worst. We probably change her every 1.5-2hrs. But I've seen her soak through in 30 min before.

I just assumed she has a bigger bladder and therefore more pee.

  • G drinks around 25-28oz a day. So it doesn't seem like she's drinking too much more than G and he's only 18 months.

We've always had to change G every 1.5-2 hours.  So I guess I just always assumed that was the norm.  You could try adding a small NB sized doubler to the freetimes to see if that helps.   Maybe something hemp or bamboo?

As far as the rash, I'd treat for yeast now and then start clean once you're done with DC.  I would still lean towards it being caused by sitting in a wet diaper too long at DC.  It probably turned into yeast because she had the existing rash and continued to sit in a warm, wet diaper too long.  If it comes back after she's been out of DC for a while then you can re-evaluate your routine.

  • I think is normal, toddlers are learning to hold their pee more and when they née to go, they just do it until their little tank is empty. Something the I have notice with my LO is the, when he is wearing a underwear he holds his pee and when he want to use the potty. The potty gets half of pee. Also when he wakes up dry in the morning and his first pee of the day, he fill up the potty. Another thing the I notice is the diapers, the diapers are for 35 pd only, and my LO is almost 35pd.

  • Ok I just remember what I was going to said. Is been for a while the you said the your LO drink and pee a lot. And for what I reed on your post she is also developing rash. I think you need to made a schedule and see how many time a day she pees, and it you wipe her at every she pees. Also check for the color of the urine. Then the best think to do is to schedule and visit to her doc, she may have a bladder infection the is causing her to pee a lot. But I think you need to check exactly how often she goes. Also made sure to count how many glasses of liquids she drinks for day.

  • Hmm.  I wondered about that.  Since she has a yeast diaper rash, I also wondered if she might have a yeast infection?  She has been pointing to her business, and saying "ew, yucky!"  I didn't know if that was something the DC was teaching her (which I don't like, she shouldn't think of her lady parts as yucky) or if it's just a phase bc she has recently learned the word yucky, or if it might be uncomfortable or painful or itchy, and she doesn't know the right words to say.

  • Oh, but in order to get her tested for a bladder infection, don't they have to go in and extract the urine at this age?  I don't want them to have to do that if they don't have to!?!?!

  • I don't think so, I think is different for LO, I'm not so sure. That's why is important for you to write the intake and out put of her. Is she is saying yuck, it could be something the is bothering her.

With her DC this is not an option.  Hell, I can't even get them to change her diaper on an acceptable schedule.  There's no way they could manage this correctly.

  • I think if you could get her to pee in a cup at the dr, that would be acceptable. But at 20 months and if she doesn't go on the potty yet, that would probably be next to impossible.

Is her vagina red? does she seem to be itching it at all?  If so, maybe you are right and she has a yeast infection there. I hope not! Poor thing, that would be miserable.

BFP #4 11/6/12. EDD 7/16/13~my birthday! No sac found @ 5w1d, betas not increasing. Natural m/c started 11/20/12.

  • They can use a PUC, which is basically a plastic bag that adheres to the vagina, catches the pee, then they can peel it off for the urine sample. They don't have to use a catheter. But it doesn't really sound UTIish to me... is there an odor to her urine? Does it look darker than usual? Is she running fevers? It just sounds like her intake is increasing so her output is as well.
  • I would tend to think she's just peeing a lot b/c she has drunk a lot. We had to put doublers in all DS's diapers sometime around 14 to 16 months, I think. I'm pretty sure he doesn't drink anywhere near 32 oz of liquid a day, either.

  • While I know different kiddos are different wetters, there is no way I could put DD in a Freetime and expect anything other than a leak within 2 hours.

  • Thanks Jane and Aurora.  That helps ease my mind some.  Just because it's always worked in the past doesn't mean it always will.

  • Wait a second...No one suggested "buy more diapers?"  Daytime fitteds, anyone?
  • yeah, seriously.  I'm with Stoney! Though, of course, I do not want E to have any type of infection…I say buy more diapers.

Are your nighttime diapers still working/not leaking?

  • @mandmeesh She holds it over night. We put her in a best bottom with a doubler and a hemp insert an that handles her first morning pee.
I bought some fitteds to try for overnight but haven't started yet.

I'm thinking if the leaks and rash were related to an infection she would have trouble holding it overnight.  I know with a UTI you have to pee practically constantly.
