Babies: 3 - 6 Months

4mo wakeful question

Here is another question about 4mo ww.
My LO is now 4.5mo. She has not yet learned to rollover, but she tries. Past week her kicking in her sleep has gotten so strong, she almost wakes herself up every 2-3 hours. Nursing will put her back to sleep but she starts kicking the minute she is in her crib, so now we are co-sleeping ( she kicks less in our bed).
I know that every baby is different but for your LOs, when did they stop kicking (if they also did this). Is it after they learn to roll over? Or is it not related to rolling over at all? TIA.

Re: 4mo wakeful question

  • My kids started kicking before they could roll over and after the fact as well. I think it's just something babies do some times. Your baby will roll over when it's their time.

  • My LO rolled over as we neared the end of the 4mo wakeful. She was the same with really powerful kicks while she was sleeping. Then one day while having some tummy time she just flipped right over. So it could be leading up to your LO rolling over!
  • DS will be 21 weeks tomorrow and we're still having rough nights. It's better than several weeks ago, but the last couple nights we had to go in and settle him 4 times.

He's been able to roll since before the 4MW started. He still kicks like crazy.
  • So glad you asked this. My DD is the same age. She hasn't rolled over yet either and she does the same thing all night!! (we still have her in the bassinet in our room) Are you transitioning out of the swaddle yet?
Sorry I have no advice :-(
  • Hi JGo517, I saw an youtube video where kicking is supposed to be part of how babies roll over. It leads to them learning to push off the floor, then coordinate it with twisting upper body, then ta da! roll over.
I asked this because at daycare DD sits in boppy bumper or chair most of the day but very little time laying on the floor. So she doesn't have the opportunity to practice roll over. So I'm afraid her 4mo ww will be long. but it could be totally unrelated too like kattant12 said. I was just looking for any ideas.

DD was never a swaddler, she likes to move around in her sleep except when she is sleeping in the car sear/stroller which she loves. For now cosleeping helps because our bed is softer than crib so her kicking doesn't quite mount to waking her up, until she gets hungry at 4 AM. oh well, good luck to everyone with LOs in 4ww.

  • So the kicking thing is normal? Forgive my ignorance. This post made me feel so much better because my 4MO will kick and kick while asleep in the crib but not in bed with me.

Hmmm. She only kicks like that when swaddled at night. It's more like a leg lift and slam into bed. Haha. I give her plenty of floor time during the day and she will only do normal leg kicks ( like the "bike ride" movement). So it seems more like her way of busting out of the swaddle. I know I need to transition from that soon, but she really needs the calming aspect of the swaddle otherwise she will never stop moving! :-/
    Thanks for the input!!
  • @JGo517, my DD does those hard kicks which DH calls thunder kicks and she is not swaddled. I tried giving her tummy and floor time after work today, but no kicks. At least we had some quality time playing on the floor.  Also, this is the video I was talking about https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sqSslKxJ4LE.

@BoyOhBoys, same for my DD. she kicks less when she sleeps with me in our bed-cosleep. Another reason put her in our bed for now is that she kicks so much, she gets too hot in her fleece PJs before falling asleep, but if I put her in cotton PJs, she gets cold in the middle of the night and I can't put blanket on her (even if it is not a suffocation hazard) because she kicks it right off. At least with me, she kicks less, the bed shakes less so she sleeps more, and I can keep her warm.
thanks for sharing ladies, I too feel better knowing DD is not the only one :)
