Bottles

How do you know when it's time to switch bottles/ nipples?  My daughter is 7 months old and is mostly breastfed, but gets 1-2 bottles of formula per day at daycare because my production is low.  She usually has 2x 3oz bottles and 2 x 4oz bottles during the day.  We have been using Tommee Tippee 5oz bottles with the slow flow nipple all along.  How do I know when I need to switch to a different nipple or go to a larger bottle?  Does formula need a faster flow?  Obviously I don't want it to come out so fast that she chokes on it, but it seems like it takes her a really long time to get much from the bottle, especially when it's formula.  It does drip down her chin though.  If she's used to the shape of the Tommee Tippees do you think ti would be hard to switch to another bottle like Dr Brown's?  Thanks!

Re: Bottles

  • How long does it take her to take a bottle? We are EFF and it takes DS 5-8 minutes to take 5oz using a level 2 nipple. I think they recommend staying on level 1 if you BF, but you could try using a level 2 to see how she does.

My son started on Tommee Tippee, and had no problem switching to Dr. Browns. The nipples are pretty similar. Dr. Brown's nipples are much slower than Tommee Tippee- we used slow flow for TT, but stage 2 nipples for Dr Browns.
  • I haven't really watched the clock while she has a bottle, but it depends how distracted she is and she does get pretty distracted most of the time when I feed her a bottle.  She will suck for a little while and then start batting at it or biting it or look away.  I have to get her to focus on it to really drink a decent amount and even though she doesn't usually finish the entire thing at once.

  • @snookums2013 when my LO started doing those things (losing interest, biting, looking away) I went up a level. We use Dr. Browns. So LO is currently using a level 2 nipple. It's helped a lot and he's eating a lot better. I actually think we might move him up to level 3 soon.

However- my LO does a lot of biting when his teeth seem to hurt. So I wouldn't throw away your level 1 nipples until you try the level 2's a few times!
  • Good to know, thanks.  I think I'll ask at daycare if she does the same thing before I switch her.
