TTC after 35

Can I Join Now? *LO Mentioned*

Hi all!

I am currently 34, but will turn 35 this year and we will start TTC shortly after that. I'm very anxious and would like to get a head start here. :-)

DH and I have been married 12.5 years and had our first and only LO in May 2013. We were basically NTNP for the first 11+ years of our marriage, with no go. My AF is very irregular and DH was born with epispadias, but I think I was the bigger issue in our TTTC.

We had just started the conversation about fertility treatments, etc when I turned up pregnant. After 11+ years I guess the stars just aligned. I had a very uneventful pregnancy, but we had a "failure to descend" during labor and ended in a c/s.

LO is 10 months and still BFing, I have had no signs of AF returning. I plan to wean LO between 12-16 months (May-Sept) and start trying in December. I am anxious about my previous irregular AF and her impending return.

We also may be moving states in May/June 2014, so I am also anxious about switching providers mid (hopefully) pregnancy or while TTC/Fertility treatments.

Sorry this got to be so long. I look forward to being a supportive member of this board. Any tips/advice in the meantime would be greatly appreciated!

  • Welcome!  I hope TTC goes more smoothly this time around.  You may find that you have more regular cycles after having one baby--apparently that's not uncommon.  I had really irregular cycles when I was younger, too, but the last few (after DD was completely weaned) have been pretty predictable.  Good luck!

Hi @shoecrazysarah! We are in a similar situation with LOs. I am BFing my 14 month old and haven't had a PPP. DH and I decided that we would initiate the weaning process to jumpstart ovulation. We night weaned DS a few weeks ago and I think that I might have ovulated this week. I'm really hoping, but we shall see. He has four nursing sessions a day now, and I'm gradually phasing them out.

Welcome to the board and I wish you luck.

  • Thank you for the warm welcomes!

@Davie813‌ I am glad to hear that it is common to become more regular after having LO. My mom was very irregular prior to having me (only child) and became regular after. I am optimistic :)

@URMySunshine77‌ DS is down to nursing once per night. I have heard that night weaning can be enough to bring AF back. Good luck! Any weaning tips?

@Shoecrazysarah: I am totally new to weaning. What I'm doing is fading out one session per week by starting with six or five minutes the first day and then subtracting a day as we go. Then by the end of each week it shouldn't be as hard to say goodbye to that session (for the both of us).

I never anticipated that weaning would be so difficult for me. Just a word of warning--it could do funky things to your hormones and emotions. I had crying jags after night weaning, so I'm anticipating more emotions. However, perhaps fading the sessions out each week will blunt a bit of those emotional rushes.

Good luck here and PM me if you ever need to talk.

Met with RE 4/11. 2 IUI's BFN. DE best option. Switched clinics to do "shared" program. Had to retake all tests and a mamm that put me behind and then on a DE waiting list for 12 months. Picked a donor!! (10/13/13) Got matched. Estimated transfer in December. After 2.5 years of patiently waiting I will finally cycle....can hardly believe it. DE cycle got cancelled. One of her tests came back positive.  Waiting for another donor. Donor picked!! (1/18/14)

  • @URMySunshine77‌ Thank you so much for the weaning tips and the shift in emotions warning. I'm not a crier and it seems that is all I did when I was pregnant - happy, sad it didn't matter, I cried :)

Again, thank you all for the welcoming!

    Welcome
  • Welcome! I am new as well. I am in a similar situation. We had trouble TTC with #1 and now I am nervous about being the treatments all over again. We bf as well; however, lo has been weaned (around 17 to 18 months old) for almost a year. We have unofficially been trying since then, we no progress. Hopefully everything will go well for you.

  • URMySunshine77Shoecrazysarah  I thought weaning was going to be really difficult and I was very nervous. One day I came home late and started cooking supper right away, basically changing my routine. I usually would sit down with LO and we would nurse. I kept my eye on her, but she was distracted with the new routine and being in the kitchen that she did not ask for nursing. Then the next day it happened again. We were weaned from day time (around 16 months).

The night time was the one I did not think would ever stop. Then one night we were on the couch and she fell asleep by herself before nursing. I did not offer the next time, and then I think she nurse one more time after that and we were done.

I found changing the routine worked for me. I know it might not work for everyone, but I thought it might be helpful. Especially since it was so stressful for me to think about doing.

    Thanks @MissJulieRenee,

LO is very good about rolling with routine changes, so I think we might do that. I was considering reading books to him in the living room before bedtime (instead of in the nursery) when it becomes time to wean from the nighttime feeding.

I have also been feeding him a whole bunch of solids before the session that we are weaning this week, and that seems to have helped. I really appreciate your help!

  • URMySunshine77  you are welcome. I hope it goes well. I remember that was about as stressful as trying to figure out bf in the beginning.
