talk to me about baby size and nb dipes...especially if you had a large baby

I had a growth scan today because my GD is out of control even with insulin.  I went hog wild on a nb stash, because my son was tiny when he was born, six pounds at 40 weeks.  But today at just about 32 weeks little girl is measuring almost 5lbs already and two weeks ahead. I'm starting to worry that I'm going to have a large baby and that none of my NB fluff will fit.  So lets here it, if you had a large baby, how much did they weigh AND for how long did NB fluff fit (if at all) before you moved onto OS dipes.  I'm thinking if she gets here and is huge, I will use just my size one thirsties and Assuntas with prefolds and sell everything else unused to get the most of my money back.

  • Both my kids are giants for my family (perpetually small babies). They were both over 8lbs and both were in NB dipes for 6-8 weeks.

Interesting.  I'm getting mixed answers amongst my friends who used cloth.  But 6-8 weeks would be fabulous.

  • DS2 was 7lb-11oz at birth but put on weight fast.  He was ~11lb at 5 weeks and I couldn't snappi his NB prefolds and I just had to trifold them, which meant every cover got poop on it.  His RaR NB covers technically still will go on him now at 16lb (10 weeks old), but I stopped using them because I couldn't fit anything underneath that would protect them from getting poop on them.

I have 3 rar covers so that is good to hear.  The only nb covers I think will get nixed immediately if at all are my bummis.  But everything else is size 1, so I think I'll have more time with those.

  • My last LO was 8 lbs 1 oz.  She outgrew her xsmall prefolds pretty fast.  But is 8 weeks now and is still comfortably in small prefolds, small workhorses,  and has a ton of room in her newborn Imagine covers.
  • My baby was small for my family at 8 lbs 12 oz at birth and is 3 weeks old now weighing about 9.5 pounds. The Kawaii p and n he will wear for a while. He is almost grown out of his bg nb. I have 2 Alva nb that he can wear for a couple more weeks. I love my regular flips with nb osocozy prefolds

  • Don't forget that the ultrasound has a margin of error. I had one a few weeks before M was born that estimated his weight at 7 lbs 8 oz. He weighed a pound less at birth.

  • I didn't have GD with DS, but he always measured 2 weeks ahead, as well. My OB had me convinced that I would birth a whale of a baby, but he was only 8 lbs at 40 weeks. I think it's just really hard to predict these things. That said, we didn't CD full-time until he was bigger, but we did have some Lil' Joeys that fit him for a while. From what I can tell, those run pretty small for the NB AIOs, so hopefully your stash will still work out.

I had a 9# 5oz, 21 1/2" baby.  He was 6.5 pounds at 35 weeks, so it sounds like we might have similar size babies, since they theoretically gain about a half pound a week.

We used BG newborns and Lil Joeys for the first probably 6-8 weeks.  Then I used newborn Simplex and if they were all dirty my smallest/trimmest one size diapers which I think were my BG Elementals until the next laundry.  He outgrew the newborn Simplex at around 4 months.

ETA:  I didn't have GD either.  Just a big baby boy!

  • LO was 8.6 and gained fast. Most everything fit for around 6 weeks. He grew out of the NB prefolds first but I had the next size. NB BGs never worked for us. He leaked every time. NB simplex, RaR and mini blueberry covers fit for quite awhile. I probably stopped using them before he actually outgrew them.

  • 8.10 at birth and she fit her newborn CD's just fine - She would still fit in nearly all of them today at 6 weeks but she outgrew the absorbency, not the size. We used GMD Workhorses w/Thirsties covers, Thirsties size one AIOs, Alva newborns, and Grovia newborns. The Grovias were getting a little snug about a week ago the last time she ever wore it, but it fit. We are fully converted to her OS stash as of about 3 days ago, but again that's really only due to absorbency issues.

  • It's more the leg size vs weight IMO. DS was born 2 weeks early and 7 lb 2 oz. and we were into OS completely at 5 weeks. And they pretty much fit at 3 weeks, they were just too bulky.

  • So even if you have a "big" baby. The baby may be long vs short and chunky. So he NB diapers may still fit for a while.
