Cloth Diapering

Drying Diapers

One of the other threads got me curious. Do you all throw your diapers and liners in the dryer? I've been hanging mine on a drying rack once they come out of the washing machine. For some reason I thought that I had read to hang them to dry, so that's what I have been doing. Do you use the dryer simply for time reasons? Does hanging them vs. drying them in the dryer differ at all? Does it depend on the type of diaper? (I've been using AIOs and Pockets with MT inserts). Just curious! Thanks for your input :)

Re: Drying Diapers

  • I hang everything with elastic to dry generally speaking to prolong its life.

I put all my prefolds and inserts in the dryer because they can take the wear.

  • Same, covers and wetbags get line dried, and inserts and prefolds are dryer dried.

  • Heat drying will shorten the lifespan of anything with elastic and PUL. I hang dry my pocket shells but I put AIOs and fitteds in the dryer. Otherwise they seem to get stiff and smell a bit funny because things like that would take a very long time to dry in our climate.
  • I'm bad. I throw everything in the dryer on low. I don't have time for hang drying. Though I'm getting a drying rack soon for sunning.

  • Same as PP's.  When I first started CDing, I dried my covers in the dryer a few times.  Not even regularly.  I can tell so much of a difference from the newer ones I have that I've never dried.  From now on, I only dry prefolds and inserts in the dryer.  Everything else gets line dried.

  • If it's get a waterproof layer, it's line dried (AIOs, Pocket shells, Covers, wet bags, etc). Everything else goes in the drier to save time and avoid mustiness (I don't have enough AIOs to have a problem line drying time. They just get worn less). The exception to this is grovia AI2 inserts. They have PUL, but I dry them in the drier because I don't care if the PUL delaminates on them.

  • I wash and dry all inserts, I hang covers, but I do give AIOs a half dry before I hang them, otherwise it takes too long to dry. I will say though, I don't use AIOs often, so they don't get that much wear and tear doing a half dry.

  • Last time I threw pretty much everything in the dryer. This time I got some of those ikea octopus hangers and I'm going to try to be better about hanging covers, at least. We do have a line and like to put stuff in there when it's nice.

My IKEA octopus hanger has been the best investment for cloth diapering!!  It's *perfect* for hanging diapers to dry!!  I don't have to have diapers strewn all over the laundry room anymore - it's great!

  • We primarily use BGEs. And those take forever to line dry. So we started using the dryer. Once the weather is nicer and since I'm home I'll line dry them.

If I used pockets I'd hang the shells. We do hang dry covers, wetbags, pail liners indoor.

I have been eyeing that IKEA octopus.  Good to know if works well!

  • I depends on my mood, and on my baby's mood. I try to hang dry everything with PUL. I also attempt 20 minutes in drier followed by hanging to soften prefolds, flats and inserts.

Thanks for all of the replies! I will continue with what I've been doing since it is working for me, but it is nice to have the info from you pros.

  • What is this Ikea Octopus drying thing you guys mention? I've been searching for something nice enough looking that I could hang in his room for drying wool between uses.  This sounds like it might be what I am looking for.
