Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

flight tips for 18mo?

We'll be taking a 4 hour flight when LO is about 18 months.  Both DH & I are going, but we are not planning on getting a separate seat for LO.
Would you recommend window and middle?  or aisle and middle?

and what other travel tips do you seasoned travelers have for us?

  • LOts of new snacks, toddler headphones and music he likes, iPad apps and movies/tv shows! We just survived a 12 hour flight with a 17 month old, so you can do it! We however bought him a seat, so I can't speak to seat positioning.

  • Snacks, sippy cup for take off and landings, magna doodle or aquadoodle, DD loved the safety brochure on the back of the seat. Will you be bringing your stroller? If so, use it to get down to the gate and gate check it right before you get on the plane. We flew with DD when she was about 20 mo. The flight there she was OK but the one back was rough. DH and I had to keep a sense of humor b/c DD was doing her best to escape. We took a walk or two to the back of the plane just to get her out of her seat and kill some time.

We just flew recently with our DD who was 15 months at the time.
We brought snacks, sippy cups, books & toys -- I packed away the toys and books the week before we left so she wouldn't be bored with them on the flight.  Since we had to be at the airport an hour before our flight, that gave her plenty of time to run around and burn off some energy (and charm the people who would be on our flight ;) )

Another good piece of advice we followed is that when it was time to board, DH took the carry-on bags while DD and I stayed behind a while longer. That gave her time to run around more. I waited until last for us to board, and it gave her at least 10 extra minutes to burn off some energy. She was ready to just sit and play on our laps by the time we got on the plane.
