We'll be taking a 4 hour flight when LO is about 18 months. Both DH & I are going, but we are not planning on getting a separate seat for LO.
Would you recommend window and middle? or aisle and middle?
and what other travel tips do you seasoned travelers have for us?

We brought snacks, sippy cups, books & toys -- I packed away the toys and books the week before we left so she wouldn't be bored with them on the flight. Since we had to be at the airport an hour before our flight, that gave her plenty of time to run around and burn off some energy (and charm the people who would be on our flight
Another good piece of advice we followed is that when it was time to board, DH took the carry-on bags while DD and I stayed behind a while longer. That gave her time to run around more. I waited until last for us to board, and it gave her at least 10 extra minutes to burn off some energy. She was ready to just sit and play on our laps by the time we got on the plane.
