Let's talk about wet bags and diaper pails

So I've been thinking about this, as I build my CD stash and purchase the necessary accessories for CDing.
what's your wet bag and pail liner setup like?
Specifically, do you use only one or the other or do you use both diaper pails and wet bags?
Do you have more than one of these?
Where do you keep them?

I've heard suggestions such as:  pail or wet bag right by crib, wet bag or pail in bathroom and 2 small wet bags in diaper bag.

I was operating under the (somewhat naive) assumption that I would just need 1 wet bag in the bathroom but after reading a bunch of other people's stories I'm learning this is probably not going to work and it might be wise to have something right next to the crib/changing table :)

Re: Let's talk about wet bags and diaper pails

  • I have a trash can from Walmart with a swing lid for my pail.
I've got 2 planet wise pail liners to line the pail with.

I've got a large planet wise wet bag for traveling.

I've got a small wet bag for my diaper bag for a quick outing.

I've got a medium wet/dry bag, planet wise, for an all day outing.

I store them in a drawer when not in use.

  • I have my pail next to the changing table. I also move it to my bathroom during the day because that's where i spray my diapers.

  • I keep one wetbag in her room, that I carry into the bathroom when I spray, then take back to her room.

She is in DC during the week, so I have a total of 5 wetbags that we keep in rotation.  We used to keep one wetbag in our room, since we changed her there a lot.  Plus the one in her room, 2 for DC (washing EOD) and then an extra just in cases.  5 is the perfect number for us.

What works best for you is going to vary greatly depending on your childcare situation, how often you wash, how often you go out, and when/where you change baby.  I've never used a pail or pail liner, I like my hanging wetbags.

  • I have a pail that I'm keeping next to my changing station, two liners.  I have 3 wetbags, 2 smaller ones for the diaper bag and 1 medium for longer outings.  I was also just gifted a large kanga care hanging wetbag....I think I could totally just use that instead of the pail if I had to, I plan to keep it in the bathroom where I spray.

  • Thanks Guys (not sure why I'm stuck in the grey). I will be staying home with LO. I might go back part time but only  a few evenings a week (and my husband will be home with baby in the evenings if this happens) so there won't be any need to deal with a daycare. I will likely be washing every 2-3 days.
I was thinking: 1 or 2 small wetbags for diaper bag (I'm sure we'll go out and about but unless he is being babysat by my MIL or something for a random date night we would likely just be making quick trips or at longest a daytrip to see my mother over an hour away), 1 pail or wetbag in the bathroom where our sprayer will be and lastly, an optional medium wetbag hanging by the changing table in case I just need to throw it in and come back to it later to spray it.
    What do you think?

  • I would suggest a medium wetbag for your diaper bag just because the small is really small.

Spraying doesn't happen until you start solids so unless there is zero room wherever you are planning to change, I would consider making your main solution where you will change.  I liked an open pail at the end of the changing table because I'm able to just throw the diaper and wipes in as I'm changing (and able to keep a hand on DS).

I mentioned this to DH and he insists that he is completely uncomfortable tossing NB poop directly into the washer. Even though I told him it was water soluble.

So I could just keep the main pail/wetbag by the changing table then move it into the bathroom once solid foods start.

Now I just have to decide if a pail or wet bag will work best for me
    ;)

  • Whatever your main solution is, I would have 2 of them.  You always need a second one for while the first one is in the wash.

I wash every other day so keep that in mind. I have two small wetbags for the diaper bag and two large wet bags. I hang the large wet bag on a hook above the changing table and since we just started solids I just take the bag and the dirty diaper into the bathroom, spray the diaper and put it in the wetbag; then I hang it back up above the laundry table until laundry time. It is working for us so far.

Also before we started solids I never ever sprayed (and considering how little he eats I still rarely have to) and my diapers have no stains and my other laundry has never had poop on them other than when he pooped on me. I have a highly explosive pooper too. Unless he is spraying and doing the laundry I would not let your husband dictate your wash routine.

    Edited because I missed a pronoun :-)

  • Thanks  everyone! Yeah,it's hard for my husband to imagine what a situation is going to be like before it happens so I think if I show him NB poop will be fine in the washer he'll understand. And by that I mean, if I just do it and then a month later say "hey I've been doing this for a month" he'll be fine. He needs like physical proof of something or personal experience with something for him to really understand.

  • If you bf there really isn't much to spray since its so watery....

Just an FYI if you haven't dealt with NB bf poop.

We do the pail/ pail liner in the nursery. And wetbags for outings and in the bathroom for spraying diapers.

I wasn't sure what our needs would be so I only bought a pail with a lid from Walmart that I put a wet bag in (it stays downstairs in the laundry room) and 1 medium wet bag that I put in the diaper bag and use by her bassinet at home. I would like to buy one more to keep in her nursery so that the medium bag can stay in the diaper bag.

  • I have 2 pail liners that I rotate for my main pail (wash every other day). I have that set up by the changing table. Then I have 3 smaller wet bags that I rotate in and out of my diaper bag.
