What do you use for movie watching in car?

We just traded in our van that  had a built in DVD system for an SUV that does not.
I want to have some sort of movie viewing ability for my 4 year old when we go on long trips and am wondering what others use for this if you don't have a built in system?

I was considering buying the dvd players that strap to the back of the front seats but a friend over the weekend told me they don't work well. Now I'm thinking of a tablet that I can download movies to (of course the majority of our movies are non digital so I'd have to purchase more digital copies). I have a Kindle that he uses in the house and am wondering if I get something similar to that. I can either give him my kindle and get me a newer one or go with a cheaper non kindle, non ipad type of tablet.

Do any of you have something other than a built in system that you use? what do you recommend?
Thanks!

  • Thanks so much! I wasn't aware of freetime but just looked it up and it sounds great! We have Amazon Prime and I do so much on it I can't believe I didn't know about this!

  • Just figured out why I didn't know about it... I have an older Kindle Fire (a whole year and a half old!) and it's not supported! :(

  • Loading the player...
  • I know... soon ds2 is going to want in on the action and then I'm in trouble. I'm considering buying a wireless media drive (there is a Sandisk one on Amazon that will work with the Kindle) that can stream I think it's up to 5 movies/shows at a time to multiple devices. That way both boys can have a device but watch their own thing.  My biggest issue will now be updating everything to a digital copy, most of our movies are just DVD's and family members buy us DVDs all the time, I feel rude telling them that we need digital copies and not just the DVD.

  • We use a kindle fire. I made a little sleeve that fits on the headrest so that both boys can see it.
  • We use our ipad mounted on the headrest. We got a special mount. Works great

  • We also have a double portable DVD player that straps on to the head rests. They work great

  • we have the double portable headrest strap kind also. however, my kids are twins so they watch the same stuff. I'd prob do two singles if I had different aged kids.
I won't say they're awesome, we've had it for 3 yrs and maybe around 1 1/2 yrs had to replace one of the wires that stopped working (we just bought a full second set assuming other parts would start to go) and then one of the screens stopped working last summer so we had the backup for that.  I researched a lot of them & they all have the same reviews, they don't last forever. Just don't get the really cheap ones b/c they won't last long at all.

We started with one portable DVD player which worked great for years. We still use that for our oldest in the third row and we bought the two screened DVD player for our last trip with the two younger boys in the 2nd row. It gets unplugged really easily. And other than car we don't use it. The original one we brought everywhere with us.
