Cloth Diapering

Late intro and a couple questions

I've asked a number of questions so I figured it time I intro'd.

I have a wonderful little girl who is almost 7 weeks old. We've been CD-ing since one week old. Dh is still apprehensive about cd but continues to go along with it bc he knows how much money we're saving. I'm in school for early childhood Ed and will graduate this summer! We have two fur babies that we love dearly too.

Now my questions:
1. I have planet wise pail liners. They smell funny, but my diapers don't. Anything I can do to get rid if their funk? It's kind of a sweet nb poo smell.
2. DD had leaked out of her diaper this morning (again). She had been in it for maybe 5 hours. It was a kawaii p&n with a bamboo insert and it was soaked. She's a tiny thing (maybe 8.5 lbs at 7 weeks) so double stuffing makes the leg holes gap. We also use prefolds and GMD workhorses, but it bothers her skin to be next to the wetness that long. Any suggestions for what I can do overnight?

And a picture for making it through this super long post!

Re: Late intro and a couple questions

  • Welcome!

1.) Are you washing the pail liners with your CDs?  The smell could be an early indicator that something in your wash routine isn't getting things quite clean enough. If that's the case it would be good to catch and correct it now before your diapers start to have issues.  What's your wash routine like?

2.) If the inserts are soaked, you need to add absorbency.  You could either try using something more absorbent than the bamboo inserts with your p&n's (maybe hemp with a NB MF insert on top or even a  small prefold ??) Or you might have more luck using something like a GMD workhorse or a tri-folded prefold with a doubler but putting a stay dry liner on top.  If you have any microfleece receiving blankets you aren't using you can cut them up to make custom liners.

  • Wash routine- cold rinse (maybe two if her poo diapers are really bad), hot wash with tide to the level 1 line, extra rinse, usually every third day. We have semi hard water but have a water softener. I may have been using too much tide before so I cut back a little.

Any doublers you recommend? And I don't think we have any micro fleece blankets, but ill have to check.

  • Wash routine seems fine to me other than you might have to wash EOD when you get to the stinkier toddler pee stage. I'd just keep an eye (or nose?) on your diapers to be sure they don't start to smell.

As far as doublers I really like my Rumparooz 6R in hemp, but I didn't buy it separate. It came with a fitted that I'm not using ATM. I know a lot of people like the JoeyBunz hemp doublers but I've never tried them.

Do you have anything you can use to try out double stuffing before buying anything? I'd hate for you to buy a bunch of doublers only to find out that you can't make your P&Ns work ON no matter how you stuff and you end up having to buy fitteds. KWIM?

  • What a cutie!!

I agree with @CLLDLL . Pay attention to your diapers to make sure they're not developing an issue. If it helps, I think the only time our PlanetWise Pail Liners got funky was when I accidentally left them right side-out to dry (soft side out, shiny side in). Water stayed in, so they didn't totally dry.

As for ON, we weren't ever able to make pockets work ON (although I know lots of others make it work!), so I'd recommend going the stay-dry liner with your workhorses and prefolds route. We like silk liners (and since they're only for ON, the cost wasn't crazy), but fleece works fabulously for lots of people.

  • I didn't realize I should turn my Pail liners inside out to dry- maybe that's the problem.

I might try two bamboo inserts. Or I also have a ton of gmd double sided wipes. If I added one of those, do you think it could add enough absorbency to make a difference? I just don't have anything else that I could stuff with other than mf inserts.

  • If two bamboo inserts isn't too fluffy, that's definitely going to be a better option. The wipe will add a tiny bit of absorbancy, but probably not enough to be worth it.

  • I used an osocozy fitted last night and no leaks! Being wet didn't seem to bother her to much last night (it usually bothers her during the day so that why I wasn't trying it at night.) once she sleeps ttn, I'm sure ill have to try new things- max time in a diaper right now is about 6 hrs.

What about baby wash clothes? Will they add much absorbency to make a difference? I have a ton of extra of them.
