"Are you allowed to be doing that?"

I go walking at a park on Sunday mornings. Mister runs, and I walk. Not fast but just try and get out for some sun and light exercise. My boss saw me and came up and said hello, and asked if I was allowed to be out exercising. My boss is a marathoner. I would assume serious runners keep up with their running to a certain degree whilst pg. So why would she think my exercising was so weird?

  • Oh my heck. I get this ALL THE TIME! I went and got my hair done like, 5 weeks ago....and my coworkers were so offended that I'd gotten my hair colored while pregnant. Guess what? She's fine. Ugh, some people haha

  • I am in awe and jealous of the pg runners I see. I wanna be that when I grow up. (Will never happen, because I've got bad arthritis in my knees). I also know that come May I will have to switch to walking in the pool because of the heat.

I watched my friend get totally badgered by her in-laws and husband over whether she should still be running while pregnant. I'd never see a group of people gang up on an adult like that before. It was pretty stunning. She kept it up, though.

  • I had a lady ask me if I really should be ordering my small iced coffee at Dunkin the other day.... I said yes and turned around.

If I can't walk for an hour without getting winded, how am I supposed to push out a baby?

I really hope that's not an actual prerequisite. I can't walk up 2 flights of stairs or dance for more than 5 minutes without getting winded.

I had to sit for a couple if minutes. Lol. But I did waddle for an hour.

  • Haha I get asked if I'm "allowed to do _____" all the time. Everything from getting on a step stool, to walking in the dark with a flashlight, to picking up anything over 5 lbs. I'm pregnant, not an invalid. :P
  • I hate when people ask and/or just stare. I do crossfit 2-3 times a week and regularly have people side-eye me. Sure, it looks a bit funny sometimes but there is no reason I can't lift moderate weight, do workout movements, run, etc. If my doctor and I are OK with it, they need to get over it.

I think some people think you should just sit around with your feet up for the 40 weeks!  My MIL made a comment about someone who they know is going to be in a wedding  around 36 weeks and was going on and on about how she didn't know how she was going to do it!  I was like umm she probably won't even have to stand that long and it's an inside wedding!  She has made comments to me before about how I won't be able to do this or that while pregnant and after kids, I just roll my eyes.

Don't worry, its not a prerequisite! I hardly exercised at all when I was pregnant with DS (I'm not exactly proud of that) and was out of breath walking up one flight of stairs. After pushing for four hours during labor, the doc told me I had a lot of stamina and asked me if I worked out. I think my response was laughter.

I keep telling myself I'll get on an exercise routine this time, but the exhaustion just isn't going away.

  • My joints hurt too bad! But yeah, um, that person is stupid. PPl need to lay off and mind their business. honestly, your body your baby your business- I don't care if it caffeine, sushi or exercise- hell I wouldn't any anything to someone who was smoking- it's their problem!

  • I went to a Body Combat class on Saturday at 24hr.  I was just waiting for someone to come up to me and make a comment like you got.  Surprisingly, no one said anything, but I got a lot of side-eyeing...  I did avoid all the jumping and did squats instead.

Honestly, I also get winded easily when working out, walking more than 20 mins, or going up stairs, but I think it's important to get exercise so I'll take a break and then keep going.  I've been walking or exercising 4 days a week.

So many people out there really have no clue about pregnancy do's and don'ts, esp about exercise and caffeine.  Expect the comments, brush them off, and keep up the good work!

  • HA HA HA reading these make me laugh. I truly think ppl do belueve you should be laid up, stuffing your face for 40 weeks (not that I think that's a bad thing either lol).
I have a very active 21 month old and I carry him, pick him up, go to gymnastics, I exercise regularly, and I work full time. No one ever thinks I should lift anything so funny at work I have a chair in my office (it weighs no more then 7lbs). Well I lifted it and dragged it to the other office I was going in. I think 3 co-workers yelled at me. I said "really my son weighs 35lbs give me a break over a 7lb chair

  • I am in the minority here because I actually wish people would offer to do things to help me, and I wouldn't turn down a "oh let me get that.. you shouldn't be doing that!" for anything.  Of course, at Christmas my MIL thought I literally shouldn't be carrying anything (even like a small present from the tree to the gift-receiver) and that was a little overboard and annoying... but otherwise I have no need to be all "I AM WOMAN! HEAR ME ROAR!"  I'm not one to play the pregnancy card either, but if someone wants to play one for me, I don't mind ;-)

  • Ha! I hiked up a mountain last week! I loved the looks I was getting. Stopped to rest tons of times and DH held my hand the whole way to make sure I didn't fall, but still I was so proud of myself when I finished. The more exercise the better, as long as you're not over exerting.

My response:  "Probably not, but no one is stopping me :P"

  • I think from now on it's time to be snarky.

"Are you allowed to be doing that?"

"Yes, and you're allowed to mind your own business. "

  • How about pregnant hair dressers? I've been one... boy oh boy some of the comments.
    Just misinformed..
  • I definitely got a few comments and side-eyes for running all the way up until I delivered DS. I'm almost 27 weeks pregnant with baby #2, and still running about 40 miles a week. I'm also teaching Bootcamp 3x's a week.

I'd rather have a fit, healthy pregnancy and feel good and have a speedy L&D and recovery than sit around and do nothing! It also helps that my OB is a firm supporter of women exercising during their pregnancies.
