Any tips for starting late?

I am sorry if this topic is exhausted. I lurked back several pages and didn't see anything, so I'm sorry if I missed it.

DS is 12 months and has been in disposables his whole life. I wanted to CD, but it just didn't happen. Is it too late to start now? I know some babies PT as early as 18 months, so I don't want to invest too much, but I am not opposed to prefolds and covers, and I really doubt DS is going to PT before 2 years.

So what say you? Give it a go or don't bother?

Re: Any tips for starting late?

  • Definitely not too late - especially if you're open to prefolds and covers.  I would buy a dozen prefolds and a handful of covers and give it a try for a week or two.  If you like what you're doing, you can buy more of what you need.  If it's not what you expected, everything you buy would sell in a heartbeat, being only used for a very short time.
  • I would definitely give it a go!  Especially if you buy prefolds/covers.  I actually find them easier than some of the other types.  No stuffing and they wash really well!

We were travelling last summer (DD was a little over a year) and we brought about 18 prefolds and 4-5 covers.  That worked well for us for three weeks.  We washed every 2nd day or so.

In terms of cost, covers cost about $12  (Sweetbottomsbaby has a sale on for Thirsties covers for $10.84 each now - they are a well-loved brand on this board for covers)

    I use these prefolds

but GMD are really popular as well.

18 prefolds would be about $65, so with 4 covers, it would still be only about $100.  All babies train at different ages, but really to potty train under two years is rare.   Average is more like 2.5 I think.  Plus like PP already said, you can sell them when you are finished with them, or use them for a future child.  Disposables for a year and a half would add up to a whole lot more than that!

  • It's definitely not too late to start. Just be aware that you will likely need to change more often than you are used to with disposables. I aim for 2-3 hours at this age. You will also probably need something different for night time than what works in daytime.

  • If you are going to start with a small stash, I recommend half prefolds and half flats. You can decide which you like best and then order more.

  • Perhaps you could look into a diaper trial. Jillian's Drawers is pretty popular, and you will get to try several types of diapers. There are also trial programs where you can pick and choose what is in your trial package.
  • That's about when we started. Worth it. I know some kids that potty trained around 18 months. But the majority have been closer to 3 years old. Pockets were nice in her squirmier phase and snaps have prevented her from taking them off constantly. I debated the potty training issue for a long time before I jumped in. I'd get a few things that you find interesting and try them out.
  • Go for it! I didn't start until 15 months, but I'm pregnant so knew I'd get more use out of the diapers. They always keep for more babies! And like pp said, start with a few and see what you think

  • Go for it!  All we use on our 15 mo. old is prefolds (trifolded-folded into thirds and place in the cover) and covers and we love it!  Super easy and you will definitely save money, even starting later in his life.  And I find we actually don't have to change more often than disposables.
  • Yeah, I already change him pretty frequently. He doesn't always pee every two hours, but I try to make sure I change him every time he does.

Thanks for the tips and encouragement! I'm excited now!

  • I did not start until DS was 10 months old.  I bought most of my stash over black friday and bought mostly the same type of diaper.  In hindsight, I wish I had tried more brands initially and/or done a diaper trial, since the diapers I got did not fit great at first (fortunately now they fit much better).  I don't regret it at all though and am glad we made the switch!
