Catholic baptism question

For those of you who had lo baptized catholic, did your church provide a sponsor certificate for your godparents to get signed by their parish, or did your godparents just get the sponsor certificate from their own church?
We are having issues with this certificate thing. Thanks.

Re: Catholic baptism question

  • They didn't sign anything, just had to show up

  • At out church only 1 Godparent has to provide a sponsor certificate/letter. As long as you have one that can provide that then your child can be baptized at tho church; however, the only names that will go on the baptismal certificate are the names of whoever submitted the sponsor certificate. So if the other Godparent doesn't submit a certificate Then They can participate in the ceremony but won't be listed on the baby's baptismal record.

  • Our godparents had to supply proof they were confirmed Catholics. They just had call their home churches and had a document sent
  • I haven't had LO baptized (and I'm not Catholic).

My goddaughter is being raised Catholic though and I was concerned that the fact that I didn't make communion/confirmation would prevent me from standing up for her in church.

However, my friend's church just required that godparents be baptized, which I am. I didn't need a certificate or anything.

This. And when I was a Godparent I did not have to sign anything or provide any sort of letter.
  • When I was asked to be a godmother, I had to provide a letter or certificate or something from my church saying that I was a registered member and had completed the sacraments. But when we had M baptized last fall, our pastor said her godparents didn't have to do a single thing.

  • We didnt have to provide any paperwork other than a form with names so that LO's certificate had the correct info.

  • Thanks guys, I have been a god mother three times and never had to do it, it must be a parish rule. @trulyblessed22 it sounds like you encountered the same rule , do you remember who provided the form? Was it your church or the godparent's church?

    This exactly!
  • coffeeandbooks, I'm just now seeing your question.  The Godparent's church had to provide a sponsor certificate to the Godparent.  So, for us, I asked them to get one from their church and they gave it to me and I then turned it into my church.  For us, only 1 Godparent had to provide it BUT if the other didn't provide one then their name would not appear on the baptismal Certificate.
