So my cousin just posted this picture of her prom.
Whatever happened to ball gowns? I thought the whole point of prom was the one chance to really wear formal wear and go all out. What did you wear to your prom?image

Re: Random NBR: Prom

  • They all look so cute! But I agree that's not prom attire?!
I graduated 10 years ago. We wore long formal dresses.

  • She had her prom already? Seems so early! My senior prom was in 1995 - there were lots of long gowns and maybe some puffy sleeves. I was in a dress shop last weekend and there still seemed to be a lot of long dress options.
  • I graduated in 2010 and they were all still wearing gowns.

  • Wow, super casual. They all look cute, at least they can wear their dresses again? Trend was definitely long dresses when I was in HS in the late 90s.

Maybe it's not "their" prom? At our school your junior prom and senior homecoming were the important dances. The rest we borrowed friends dresses or wore something more like they are.

We wore full out long dresses for prom.
  • They all look great, but yeah, I'd never know they were dressed for a prom. Everyone wore long dresses to prom when I was in HS. I graduated in '98 though.

  • Short dresses are "in" this year for prom.

because it didn't fucking snow enough for me to build my own
  • Short dresses are also usually cheaper. So when a lot of girls are buying their own dresses for prom, it's a cheaper option.
I wore a long dress, I hated it.

  • I teach high school & most of the girls still wear long dresses, some wear short but they are much more formal than those in your pic.

  • I wore long dress. Jazz is going to 8th grade dance here are some of her dress options. Excuse the black sports bra.

  • I graduated in 1999 and we all wore long formal gowns. I wore a powder blue Jessica McClintock ballgown.

    This in blue:

What those girls are wearing wouldn't have even qualified for Sweet 16 wear in my neck of the woods back then. Even now I know the kids get REALLY dressed up!
  • Around here short dresses have been popular for a while, but they usually look more like short versions of typical prom dresses, this really surprised me.

  • I graduated in 98 and all my prom dresses were long and fancy. We would go all out, tanning, fake nails with French manicure, hair in an up do, DH wore a tux, and we got a limo.

  • @sdtchica13‌ MY DREAM PROM DRESS WAS A JESSICA MCLINTOCK DRESS! So jealous! I remember the pic from YM magazine's prom issue exactly. Like it was yesterday...

I wore a long ballroom dress and graduated in 2003, but there were quite a number of short dresses that year. Like, scandalously short.

  • I had a short dress one year and a long one the next year.

I loved my dress, but it had an annoying crinoline in it that scratched the shit out of me right at the back of my thighs...I was so uncomfortable by the end of the dance that I threw my skirt over my head in the limo on the way to the city and ripped that sucker out!
  • That girl on the far right has huge cans. I feel bad for her when she starts having kids/nursing.

I didn't go to Prom, but if I had, I would have worn a ridiculously formal ball gown. First, because that was the trend, and second, because when I go out to party, I like to look my best.

They would have been turned away at the door of my prom. And to this day still will, my school takes prom really seriously. My friends junior prom date got turned away because his shoes were a little scuffed. His dad had to bring him more shoes.

Seriously? Yikes. Glad I didn't go to school there. I'm firmly in the wear whatever the hell you want camp. I wouldn't have cared if people wore jeans. It's prom. Not a wedding.

  • This old lady also votes for long ball gowns. Mine was smurf blue. And lacy. And I wore gloves. And high hair. Ah, 1993, you were so long ago!
