Cloth Diapering

C diff infection

DS has a mild case of c diff. I am going to bleach his CDs and put him in disposables for a few days. The pedi didn't prescribe anything just said put him on proboitics for a couple of weeks. How long should I keep him in disposables?

  • No advice, but I'm sorry you and your LO are going through this!

  • Thanks! He got sick last weekend and has been sick all week. I took him to the pedi on Tuesday and they said it was a virus. He wasn't much better by Thursday so I took him back and they ran tests. He was actually much better yesterday and I got the test results yesterday evening. I think the diarrhea might be gone. He only had 2 poopy diapers yesterday and they weren't runny, just a little loose. No loose poops so far today. I picked up a small pack of sposies today so I'll just use those until they're gone. It felt so weird putting a sposie on. I already miss my CDs.

  • Yep, until diarrhea gone I would say.  And make sure you wash your hands really well with soap and warm water after changing him, otherwise it can spread.  It's no fun at all!

  • Not to be overly redundant but I will echo what others have said; bleach the sht out of everything, literally. Hot soapy water for handwashing every time you come in contact with the poop, and alcohol hand sanitizers won't kill it. It's fecal-oral transmission. Bleach the changing pad, etc. How the heck did your LO get c. diff? Antibiotics? Poor kiddo, hope you have a healthy house soon!
  • I was coming back to add about bleach the changing table or anything in contact. We were talking at work just yesterday, and someone said it can live on countertops for a month!

I'm not really certain how he got it. The pedi said he could have gotten it from another child at daycare or antibiotics. I don't know of anyone at daycare having it, although a stomach bug has been going around. He was on antibiotics a few weeks ago so I guess that's where it came from.

  • Yea, almost always antibiotics bc it decreases normal flora, then caught the c diff from somewhere. I got it once. Effing awful.

  • Should I bleach his toys too? I think I have bleached every surface in the house that is bleachable. I haven't done his room yet but I will get it tomorrow when my mom gets here. I would like to get him out of the house while I do his room. I did use some Clorox wipes on everything in his room and toys but now I realize there's no bleach in those things. :(

  • Errr, I don't know about something that could potentially go in his mouth.  Someone with more experience would need to chime in!

  • YES!! If it were me, I'd try to stay contained in as small an area as possible, and sanitize it ALL (clothes, toys, bed linens, wipe down hard surfaces, etc). :(  I'm a hospital nurse, and we don't mess with no C-Diff. EVERYTHING gets sanitized. And wash those hands as often as you think about it- hot, soapy water.

  • Thanks for the help everyone. I think I have bleached everything - all surfaces, the entire bathroom, all the floors, toys, and working on the laundry and diapers. Once the toys are dry, I'll wash them again with soap and water since they will, inevitably, go in his mouth.

  • CDIFF is no joke.  Bleach and steam clean everything.  My H had it a couple years ago from augmentin and we hired a service to come in and sterilize our house.  I wouldn't put him back in cloth until the runs have been gone for a few days to a week.
