EBF transition to solids

I took LO to her 4month well baby /vaccine exam today and the pediatrician said I can start transitioning her to solids, starting with rice cereal and advancing a new vegetable a week - makes sense I guess. But she told me that when I do the rice cereal or whatever that I shouldn't BF that meal just the solids, and to do it 3 times a day like a breakfast lunch and dinner. Idk that's seems like such a dramatic change, is that how you moms did it? Or any advise?

Maybe I'm just wanting her to say my itty-bitty breast bed baby forever

Re: EBF transition to solids

  • @theresat858‌ that's kind of what I was thinking... She didn't say I needed to now, just that it typically starts between 4-6 months so whenever I was ready. I have been googling it for a bit, we plan on at least trying to make our own baby food and rice cereal just seems gross to me so I was thinking if continue to BF the way I have been and then just kind of supplement puréed veggies, maybe a few spoons with our meals but still primarily BF.

Idk the thought of cutting our BF'ing in half really freaked me out! I'm not ready!!

i agree, that advice is very outdated. you can start them on soft foods like strips of cooked chicken or pieces of veggies like avocado or cooked sweet potato. you don't have to wait in between introducing new foods. also it is now generally recommend that you wait until 6 months to begin introducing solids. rice cereal has very little nutritional value.

in the meantime, you might want to look into baby-led weaning-- which is basically letting baby "direct" their own introduction to solid foods. you wait until they can sit up on their own (at 6 months+) and bring pieces of food to their mouths themselves. no purees or spoon feeding. we did it with our DS and it has worked out great. no frustrating force-spoon-feeding and he is a great eater (although he has bouts with pickiness, like all toddlers). here's a good intro or look for the book, baby-led weaning, by gill rapley
  • We introduced some baby oatmeal at about 5.5 months.

Kelly mom has some good info.

DS wasn't really into solids until more like 7 months. He just had little tastes until then.

  • Man, that is VERY old advice.

Solids should be given at 6 months & you do not have to start with cereal. It could be puréed fruit/veggies or you could go the baby led weaning route!!
